Conservation officers from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans can hand out traffic tickets, charge people with narcotics infractions --- even detain individuals wanted by the police. *“We don’t go oul of our way to give out traffic tick- ets,’ says officer Kirk McCrae from the DFO of- fice in Terrace. ‘But we can,”’ McCrae explains that the tickets DFO officers use to cite. people for fish and wildlife infractions are the same as those issued by RCMP officers for various offences. “You might say the tick- els are mullipurpose,’’ he says, So if the fish cops catch someone speeding ex- cessively and there isn’t a mountie around, they can is- sue the tickeL McCrae also points out “that the DFO is now doing a lot of joint patrols and road- blocks with RCMP and provincial conservation of- ficers. The idea is to make those efforts more effective — tightening the net a little bit to haul in more bad guys.
