20 Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 9, 1986 if To the editor, Politics has earned a pretty low reputation over the past few years. Very few people really seem to feel that they can look to politicians to provide the leadership to get the economy moving again. At least that’s the way people in British Columbia tend to feel these days. In Ontario and Manitoba people are thinking differently. In those two provinces peo- ple are going back to work; in fact, residents from B.C. are going to Ontario and Manitoba to find work. - It should come as no surprise to working peo- etters to the &ditor Election better come soon ple that the NDP is in power in Manitoba and holds the balance of ‘power in Ontario and that this is the reason, in my opinion, that people are going to work in those two areas. When the NDP was formed as the CCF over 50 years ago it was to give the working people a fair chance to make their way in the world. Here in B.C. we still hear people talk sceptically about the NDP as if to suggest that the NDP is no different than the Social Credit. I know that is not true but somehow the myths of ultra conservatives manage to distort reality. But each day our. workers are getting in their cars or grabbing a bus for Manitoba or On- tario where there are governments concerned about working people. There will be an elec- tion in B.C. within the next year, Will we follow the lead of Manitoba and Ontario and put people to work or will we stick our heads in the sand and pretend that politics doesn’t really make a difference? But the elec- tion better come soon before everyone moves away. - Bill Goodacre Terrace, B.C, Peaceful moves promoted To the editor, Ina recent letter to the editor regarding abor- tion, Maureen Bostock made some statements that I consider to be ob- jectionable as well as quite irrelevant to the points of contention in the current local debate about whether the municipal taxpayers’ money should be used to subsidize abortion counselling. I found especially of- fensive the sentence, “In my opinion, the anti- choice movement ad- vocates violence, ter- rorism, destruction of property and in- terference with in- dividual liberty in the pursuance of its goal.’’ Quite to the contrary, the Right-to-Life move- ment has .always ad- vocated peaceful means of preventing the violent destruction of innocent unborn human person. In addition the pro-lifers are opposed to the so- called mercy killing of the unwanted handicap- ped infants, the elderly, the infirm, and the ter- minally ill — all of whom are increasingly at risk in a society which in my opinion, tends to give ever greater homage to the ethics of ‘‘absolute freedom of the in- dividual’’ rather than to the traditional moral obligation to sustain and nurture the helpless. Certainly the pro-life goals of preserving life Unqualified success To the editor, Wouldn’t you know it, come up with a budget which doesn’t raise taxes, in fact, does just the opposite and what seems to be the response from the Socialist Op- position? ‘It can’t be done.”’ We have heard the same phrase before though. Weren’t these the same people who just a few short years ago said Expo 86, ‘It can’t be done’’? Weren’t these the same people who said that the Coquihalla, Anansis Island Bridge, Skytrain, Northeast Coal, could not be done, let alone in time, but under budget. Now I ask you, who should one believe now? Expo 86 looks to be an unqualified success with in excess of 13 million tickets sold. Skytrain is complete and has been in opera- tion since Jan. 15, 1986. Three and a half months before Expo and under budget. Both the Coquihalla and Anansis Island pro- jects are scheduled for opening in early May, both under budget. Northeast Coal, despite the fact that the hole was in the wrong place and that a private company required re- financing, both of which cost the taxpayers nothing, is still alive and well. The coal is rolling through the north, to the Port of Prince Rupert at Ridley Island. Now, as the govern- ment, because of fiscal Tesponsibility, brings down a budget tuned to our times they say again, “Tt can’t be done’. I leave it to you to draw your own conclu- sion in that regard. Honorable Jack Kempf MLA, for Omineca are at odds with tactics of violence and ter- rorism. Indeed the record shows that even in the U.S. where it has been said that ‘‘violence is as American as apple | pie’? that, as of 1985 there has not been even one instance of arson or violence against an abor- tion facility that has been proven to be planned or carried out by a Right- to-Life group. This is when it is known that there are millions of outraged citizens in North America who feel frustrated when they ff consider the strength of the government funded § and celebrity supported organizations that con- done the killing of the unborn. It has been my obser- vation that these angry individuals, nearly all Christians upon coming into a Right-to-Life J Organization, soon find that their hostility is displaced by the group’s common conviction that only the loving power of Jesus Christ is adequate to change the hearts and minds of those who op- pose us. If I seem biased and overly generous in my estimation of pro-life ac- tivists, may I offer a statement by Canada’s best known abortionist, Henry Morgentaler. Despite his fears of what he called the ‘‘lunatic fringe,’ Morgentaler conceded: ‘‘Most of the people who are anti- abortion are peace- loving, law-abiding peo- ple who just believe that abortion is wrong.” Yes, Henry, I agree. And may I add, “If abortion is not wrong, then nothing is wrong.” Tom Brophy Usk, B.C, = remarkable § ick and easy... ~ TERRACE BUSINESS GUIDE bean f Holiday Home & Pet Care Have a holiday and have your pets, plants and property cared for professionally.
