Balfour On Canada ~
London, Dec., 2:—There was a

restaurant on Saturday night to
célebrate St. Andrew’s day. Rt
Hon. A. J. Balfour, who. presid-
ed, spoke upon imperial national-
ity.

He referred to the great part
his countrymen had played in re-
conciling the principle of nation-
ality with that of ardent patriot-
ism in various parts of the world.
It was only by emulating that
example that the future of the
empire as a whole could be se-
cured,

The people of Canada and the
other overseas: dominions must
have and will have their feeling
of nationality. Every Canadian
ought to want to feel that Canada
has got its own principles for the
development of the future,

“Do not let us discourage that
local patriotism,’’ he said. ‘‘Let
them cultivate their own feeling
for the nationality ‘of Canada For
the Canadians, Australia for the
Australians, but the whole for
the empire. It was the miscon-
ception of this principle that led
to the great disruption between
Britain and the American colon-
ies a century and a half ago, and
perhaps after all it yequired that
lesson to teach us what we know,
