June 15, 1978 Montreal institute promotes | “bizarre” phenomena MONTREAL (CP) — An international: institute founded three years ago is trying to get worldwide acceptance for phenomena many people: find bizarre and others consider an outright hoax. It la - even planning to open a new world university in the Bahamas in 1980. The institute promotes parapsychology, the study of such phenomena as psychic healing, extra-sensory perception and mental telepathy. Ita presence on the downtown campus of Concordia University em- barrasses some professora and officials. John Rossner, the Anglican priest who co- founded the International Institute of Integral Human Sciences, is a professor of comparative religionnat Concerdia andnhas set up ° theinstitute in offcces rented from the university. He founded it with his wife Marilyn, a seliclaimed psychic who ia ao regular panelist on the CBC’s Be- yond Reason program. Mrs. Rossner, whe teaches special education at Mon- treal’s Vanier College and part-time at McGill University, has been praised for her success helping children with emotional and behavioral problems. She uses meditation and relaxation techniques with emildren, and says her own intuitive abilities help her identify their individual problems. . MUST USE POWERS Rossner, a slender, intense man, said in an interview that people must use — repressed mental powers to enhance mankind’s chances of heading off the gicbal chalienges of - disease, nuclear war, pollution and food and energy shortages. He said the techniques of parapsychology can do this ‘by increasing the ability ofmhuman consciousness to comprehend = reality. Mankind can't make this breakthrough into ‘higher consciousness” until it discards the straitjacket of “physical observation and logical computation which characterizes modern science,” Some academics criticize parapsychology’s ‘“‘dogma and anti-rationalism” and, in particular, the standards of experimentation of its researchers, Two Concordia professors requested em- - phatically that it be noted the institute is not affiliated with the university. One of Rossner's colleagues in the com- parative religion de- partment said the institute is a “hobby” of Rossner's and that none of the 10 professors in the department shows any special interest in it. DISTURBED BY CRITICS Rossner said these “‘nega- tive’ attitudes at Concordia, as well as at McGill, have hampered his work and made funding difficult. Canadian universities were “backward'' compared with American ones. He said he has signed up 800 research fellows around ‘the world—including media guru Marshall McLuhan, psychotherapist Rollo. May and writer Arthur Koestler. The institute used a com- puter to “cross-fertilize” the work of this network of 5 ers. Thomas Gray, a Concordia psychology professor, is skeptical of the claims and style of parapsychology.
