After the speeches had concluded and awards had been presented, one room was cleared for dancing while the banquet continued into second, third and fourth sittings in the adjoining hall. “This is not only a great fin- ancial achievement, it is also a political victory,” said McEwen. “The job now is to go forward and extend our circulation.” McEwen paid warm tributes to the 36 Honor Press Builders who raised more than $5,000 during the drive; the 335 Press Builders who turned in over $9,000; and “the thousands of others, including dis- abled persons, old age pensioners and unemployed workers, who gladly gave all they could afford to keep our presses rolling.” He also praised the leadership of PT business manager Rita Whyte: “I am in a position to know, and can therefore say, that with- out the drive, vigor, enthusiasm and push which Rita put into this campaign, we would not be cele- brating this signal victory tonight.” As in past years, Bill Hreher- chuk won the top Honor Press Builder award, with a total of $288.40. Close behind him were veteran PT supporters John De- Wever and Frank Politano. Seated at the head table with the Honor Press Builders was nine- year-old Georgie Hewison from Campbell River, who raised $50 by his own efforts. And a few seats] away from young Georgie sat Mary (“Ma”) Flanagan — “a good deal older than Georgie in years but just as young in spirit,’ said the chair- man — who received a terrific burst of applause when she was asked to stand and take a bow. A bouquet of flowers was pres- ented to Mrs. Mabel Darwin, widow of the late Charles Darwin, in whose memory North’ Vancouver press supporters turned in more than $100. Business manager Rita Whyte announced that Powell River press club had won the provincial PT shield by raising $307 in cash and subs on a $150 target; and the Greater Vancouver press shield went to South Burnaby press club which raised $658.48 in cash and subs, far overshooting a $275 tar- get. : Labor veteran Duncan Maclean, celebrating a birthday, was pres- ented with a small gift from the PT. He has been the paper’s mailer for many years. A. MacLeod, former Ontario MPP: “Have just learned you are over the top. Three cheers and a tiger for the press builders. a 21-gun salute from Parliament Hill.” me You deserve ner of the two halls, made it dif- ficult for all to hear the speeches and greetings. Messages of congratulations on the. success of the financial drive were received from Nigel Morgan, LPP provincial leader, and John Stewart, managing editor of the Canadian Tribune. “Thanks and warmest greetings” also came from Combat, the progressive French- language paper in Quebec, to which the Pacific Tribune had donated $500 out of drive funds. There was applause for the vol- unteer staff which had worked al] day preparing the banquet, and for the kitchen staff which continued serving the overflow crowd long after the dance was under way. More welcome than the applause— and indicative of the spirit of the gathering — was the spontaneous stream of people who headed for the kitchen to lend a hand. Others dismantled tables, folded chairs, and swept the floors in preparation for the dance. : Scores of people eame from prov- incial points to attend the affair — from places like Copper Mountain, Cumberland, Powell River, and many towns in the Fraser Valley and on |Vancouver Island. In his brief address McEwen spoke of B.C. labor papers of the past, such as the Cariboo Sentinel, Western Clarion, B.C. Federation- ist and B.C. Workers’ News. . . . “and into each went sacrifice, de- votion, support to keep it alive.” The Pacific Tribune carries for- ward the work these little papers began, said the speaker. “For B.C. and for Canada—the Canada of the working people—the success of our drive for. funds represents a double- barreled victory; a great moral victory of endorsation for what the PT represents, and a great political victory because it has brought hundreds of new people into a cam- paign for a Canada dedicated to peace, progress and socialism.” The list of 36 Honor Press Build- ers (supporters who had raised $100 or more) included these names: Bill Hreherehuk, John De- Wever, Frank Politano, Lena Lip- sey, Dale Schnee, Bill Stewart, George Anderson, Tom McEwen, Bert Whyte, Hal Griffin, Rita Whyte, Nigel Morgan, Mona Mor- gan, Harry Mackiewich, J. Kowalik, Alec’ Kucher, Ronnie Leblanc, Dorothy Lynas, May Leni, Rhea Dear, Nick Stoochnov, Jack Rock- endal, Alf Dewhurst, Dusty Green- well, Mike Gawricki, Myrtle Ber- gren, Grace Tickson, Al Haystead, Nancy Hamilton, John Anderson, Jeff Amy, Al Warrington and Jim Blakey.
