Rupert resident wins Nisga’a gov’t position JUST OVER 25 per cent of Nisga’a voters turned out Nov. 27 to select a new chair- person of the Nisga’a Lisims Govern- ment’s council of elders. James Stewart of Prince Rupert, who is retired, was elected with 298: yotes while Oscar Mercer from New Aiyansh received 209 votes, Jacob Nyce from Git- winksihlkw received 189 votes and Shir- ley Morven from New Aiyansh received 154 votes. , Stewart replaces Rod Robinson wha retired this year after being elected to the chairperson’s position in the first-ever Nisga’‘a Lisims elections in 2000. More than 3,300 Nisga’a were eligible to vote. The chairperson of the council of el- ders ranks third in the Lisims government structure after the president and executive chairperson. That meant a comprehensive voling system involving more than 30 people at the polling stations and al the Nisga’a ‘elections office in New Aiyansh. The - elections office functions as an indepen- dent office of the Lisims government. The Lisims government is to be elec- ted every four years, meaning that the next national voting takes place in 2004, Stewart will fill out the remainder of Robinson’s term, which is now two years. As well as this national Nisga’a by- election, a by-election was also held to fill an empty village government council- lor spot in Gitwinksihlkw in the Nass Val- ley. Peter Squires was elected with 29 vates.
