TERRACE STANDARD Businsss Review Few jobs for students so far, centre By JOANNA WONG JERICHO BEVAN and Ta- mara Sweet have declared student job hunting season officially open. The duo, both employ- ment officers for the “Hire a student program,” hope to help Terrace’s students and at-risk youths track down work for the summer. Last year, the 34-year- old program placed 210 youths in jobs in the Ter- trace and Kitimat area, Tough economic times, however, have meant less jobs and more students looking for work. Currently, there are only seven job postings, 10 less than this time last year says Bevan. Both officers remain optimistic about summer prospects. “I’m very enthusiastic and have big expectations and hope to see them,” said Sweet. Raising awareness of the program and drumming up new jobs often takes creativity. “I like getting out into the community and doing fun stunts,” said Bevan, who took part in a camp out Jast year to encourage the creation of student jobs in Terrace. This year, Bevan is thinking of dressing up a mannequin in a “Hire a student” T-Shirt and then putting it in random places around town. aeETTTTT Set Pes TAMARA SWEET and Jericho Bevan are reports ase h Hire-a-Student S, eee employment officers who say they are plenty of students needing work, but not enough jobs. Council has decided to ask the Terrace Economic Development Authority to examine the issue and make recommendations. Proposals to separate the Crown corporation into three operating entities may be sensible, said councillor David Hull. But the possibility of electricity price deregula- tion — which could cause prices for residents and in- dustries to rise at least 30 per cent to continental Market prices ~ have rung . alarm bells across B.C. Hull said the electricity generated from dams built by taxpayers’ money ’ should be used to promote more industry and com- merce here — and shouldn't be sold off as an asset that would then likely be under — | American ownership. “] think the govern- ment’s headed for a mon- Northwest Smile Design Center + DRA Okie Fn ey Fil fe Crt, TH * Serving the Northwest for 10 years ® full Face Orthodontl: Care © invisalign - the [nvisable brates © Porcelain Crowns ond Veneers * Teeth Whitening (Bleaching) ® Lotex Free Office Dr. Peter.
