Cruise ship stops in Rupert expected to benefit Terrace A GROWING number of cruise ships is now stated to visit Prince Rupert next _ year with limited side trips * to Terrace. Holland America has confirmed plans to dock its Amsterdam there Apri! 28. The visit of the nearly 1,400 passenger, 780-foot vessel will make it the fifth stop of a large cruise ship in Prince Rupert in 2003. ~Up to 120 passengers per cruise visit will be ‘able to. visit Terrace for two hours. They will travel here by train and return by bus to their ship. The bookings follow the announcement this spring of plans to build a $9 mil- lion cruise ship dock in Prince Rupert by 2004. Holland America joins several other cruise lines in bringing ships there next year to test the market in advance of the dock’s completion, In 2003, passengers will be taken ashore in smaller vessels, An informational video on the region is in the works for passengers to watch on the ship or on the bus. “It’s expected the rail excursions will sell fairly quickly,” Terrace Econo- mic Development Author- ity executive director Brian Baker said. “It’s be- lieved to be one of the top train rides in the world.” Baker said tourists vi- E ) Herbert Morven Leader wins big A PROMINENT Nisga’a leader has won more than $60,000 in a bingo game. ~ Herbert Morven, a for- mer chief councillor of New Aiyansh and now the chairman of the Nisga’a Lisims Government, won $63,576.66 Aug. 20 playing Super Star Gold at the Lucky Dollar Bingo Pa- lace in Terrace. “I can hear what they’re saying now about some- body from the Lisims gov- ernment winning this at bingo. Probably something derogatory,” said Morven, - He’s going to share the money with his twa child. ren and two grandchildren. After his win, Morven : drove back to New Aiyansh for an appoint- ment the next day, Aug. 2], with a First Nations delegation from Loon Lake, Saskatchewan. ’ He then drove south to- ward Vancouver to keep an alréady-scheduled meeting with family mem- _ bers, but stopped first in “Kamloops to pick up his winnings at the lottery cor- poration head offices there. “I’m pretty tired,” said Morven from the corpora- tion offices late on Aug. 22. “They’te giving me the cheque now.” Morven’s elected posi- tion in the Lisims govern- Ment requires him to chair sessions of the govern- | ment’s executive. Super Star Gold is a hingo game in which play- ers from around the pro- vince are linked together ‘electronically. -1f nobody wins one game, the prize money is added to the ext round or until there is a winner. One challenge to the plan is that rail excursions may be limited by the growth in recent years of business on Via Rail’s Skeena line, says Shaun Stevenson of the Prince Rupert Port Authority. ‘He says if Via isn’t available, private rail operators may be sought. “The rail excursion is one of the marquee attrac- tions of coming into Prince Rupert,” Stevenson said. Local tourism reps are spending part of this week in Ketchikan to get ideas on preparing Terrace for cruise visitors. That town boasts 730,000 visitors from a Brian Baker cruise ships a year ~ the foundation of its economy. It’s estimated Prince Rupert could attract 140 cruise ships and 250,000 Passengers a year within’ 10 years, That could eventually translate into $30 million a year dropped inte the north coast economy. “If we can get them anywhere close ta Terrace the effects on the tourism industry would be immense,” Baker said. He also noted cruise passengers often re-visit a region by other means in future years. ; The cruise dock is to be built in Cow Bay next to ihe existing Atlin terminal for pocket cruise ships. Activities developed for cruise ship passengers could also find other mar- kets. Baker suggests such offerings could also be marketed to tourists wail- ing for ferries in Prince Rupert, thereby petting them to spend more time in Terrace. Eventually, Baker says Terrace needs to develop a downtown city centre area that’s tourist friendly. _G.
