The majority of the others will be corrected soon or carly in the new year, says district highways -manager John Newhouse. The defects were found afler a study of the ministry’s 17 inland ferries. “Those four already done were prior to the ‘report being released,’’ said Newhouse. The Usk ferry was one of 10 to meet minimum safety and operat- ing standards.-Two ferries met operations and safety standards, one met operations standards and four were judged unacceptable. Already taken care of is repaint- ing the locker containing life jackets and indicating how many jackels the locker contains. A operations and-safety manual ha’ been completed. Other items on the list are changing a dangerous goods sign, using wheel chocks, ranging the chain of the emergency anchor, displaying a poster on life jacket use and having operators wear life jackets. The teport also said crews should take part im man over- board and fire exercises once a week, One item coming soon is in- Stalling lights for night time oper- alions, But one item that won't be done soon is converting the ferry’s aerial tramway for use by persons with a physical disability, said Newhouse. “The would cost between $400,000 and $500,000,’? said Newhouse. Passengers for the tramway now climb a flight of stairs, meaning that a new system so the tramway comes down to ground level is needed, he said. **The ministry realizes there is a need to do this and it has been added’ to the project _list,’’ Newhouse added, The Usk ferry service operates in two parts, a vehicle and pas- senger ferry and the passenger- only aerial tram, The tramway is used when the water is too low or when there's a danger of the ferry being frozen in, The Usk ferry is called a reac- tion ferry because it is propelled across the water by a wheel-like device that is turned by the Skeena’s current. It carried 41,106 passengers and 14,742 vehicles last year. There are three full time and two auxiliary ferry operators working in two shifts covering 18 hours a day. The ferry now operating has been there since the late 1970s and the government has operated some kind of ferry service at Usk since the early part of the century.
