IN SALMON ARM — Board Orders Company The Columbia Auto Cus- toms Ltd. of Salmon Arm has been ordered by the Labour Relations Board to reinstate a discharged employee with all back wages following a com- plaint lodged against them by Local 1-417, The Local Union charged that the employee, James Wlasitz was fired by the Company for union activity. The Union further charged that Company officials ad- vised certain employees that ways would be found to dis- credit the Union members so as to establish an excuse for dismissing them. The Union requested the Reinstate Worker Board to issue a case and desist order to the Company and to instruct it to reinstate the employee with all wages owing. Cliff Michael, the Local’s Financial Secretary stated this is the third time in two months that the Company has appeared before the Board to answer charges laid by Local 1-417. At the last hearing, the Board ordered the Firm to reinstate two other em- ployees also fired for union activity. Michael reports that all three men are now back at work. Forest Product Facts In order to ensure that mem- bers of the Union are kept in- formed on the economic state of the lumber industry, it is the in- tention of the Research & Educa- tion Department to run a series of articles, with graphs, during the coming months. 1963, when the fiscal year-end statistics are returned, will be re- corded as the year with the high- est level of lumber production in British Columbia’s history. 1963’s Coast lumber production of 3,324 million board feet (esti- mated is up 7.5% over 1962). The ten months actual produc- tion as reported by the Dominion Bureau of Statistics is 2,769 mil- lion board feet. The total for this ten month period is higher than for the entire period before 1960. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “Program > It has also been established that Millwrights who do not wish to become certified can receive a permit which en- ables them to continue work- ing as a Millwright for their present employer. They will have the full protection of the Coast Master Agreement. Any Millwright who fails to pass a test will, according to the Deputy Minister, be is- sued a permit. It is clear under the new law that while the Training Program does not make par- ticipation by the present Mill- wrights compulsory, the law does, unless the Minister grants an exemption by writ- ten permit. Study material as provided for under Appendix “B” for present Millwrights will be compiled in the very near future. A proper form to register present Millwrights will be drafted in accordance with Point 1, Appendix “B”, of the Plan. B.C. A very contentious issue in these negotiations is the pay- ment of wages by the em- ployers to millwrights, im- provers or helpers who attend vocational school to become certified in accordance with the recent law which requires tradesmen to hold certificates of proficiency. Helpers, improvers and mill- wrights under the coast agree- 1-423. ment will receive full pay while attending school. North- ern Interior Lumber operators are at present adamant in that they do not intend to pay for upgrading of Tradesmen. A committee of five has also been established to negotiate ‘with the Southern Interior employers to establish agree- ment on training for present millwrights, helpers and im- provers. The committee is composed of J. MacKenzie, Ist Vice Fresident; J. Holst, 2nd Vice President; J. Munro, Business Agent Local 1-405; J. Kelly, President, Local 1-417; W.
