| The scandal | of Canada Day By LESLIE MORRIS HE STATE, and the churches, schools, press, radio, TV—the T institutions which dominate this country—combined this year te repeat the annual scandal of Canada: Day. And; unfor- tunately, the trade union movement. and the New. Party. com- miittees are, by and large, accomplices, for they accept the situation. First of all, our national holiday is not. officially called Canada Day at all, but Dominion Day, so that it, as well as what passes for our flag, is tagged with the long-gone British colonial status. No ‘wonder many Europeans still look on Canadians as displaced Britishers. Even at that, the day could be one of official celebrations, show their skills. Public means of transportation could carry €n masse the beginning of their summer holidays. N f year the governments and employers, chisellers and tax- g@ougers all, were so miserable about the whole thing that and had to work on Monday. Why does Canada Day, in terms of public celebration, just mot exist except in the hearts of ordinary people? Is it not because the ruling circles of this country have sold out Canada mentally, as well as economically, culturally, diplomatically and militarily? How could they through all these past years, and especially since the end of the last war, have Organized the decline of Canada as an independent country while at the same time organizing national festivities to-her on Canada Day? Perhaps even they, blinded by class greed as they are; can see that to speak as patriots on our national holiday would expose them for the hollow men they are. ‘Imagine John Diefenbaker speaking for Canada when he is preparing to put Yankee nuclear warheads in Bomarc missile bases on Canadian soil. _Think of Finance Minister Fleming extolling our virtues One week after he attacked the Canadian dollar, cheapened it and so encouraged greater U.S, investments in our export industries, ee BEEN the Canadian Communists all these years who have held high the banner of our nation. Only the Commu- mist Party published and widely distributed a patriotic, demo- cratic Canada Day message to the people, calling on them to Win back their country’s independence and to be masters in their own house. Theirs is a proud record, and the day is not far-off when Canadians will appreciate it, sweHIS year’s biggest popular festivals on Canada Day were organized by the progressive Ukrainian-Canadians on the centenary of the death of Taras Shevchenko. Their national pageant in Toronto included a dance tribute to the merging into One, people of Canadians of many national origins. And only the Tribune and Pacific Tribune published a épecial Canada Day number, _. The Left more and more energetically than ever must lift Nigh the ‘banner of our country.
