In 1981, the Port Moody and Coquitlam Historical Societies voted to amalgamate and form a new heritage soci- ety, tentatively called the Burrard - Fraser Heritage Society. This new society will be responsible for the heritage of the area contained in School District 43, and will serve the communities of Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Ioco and Belcarra. The Burrard - Fraser Heritage Society will formally come into being later this spring. The Burrard - Fraser Heritage Society will collect, preserve and interpret objects, documents and photographs which relate to the Human and natural heritage of the Burrard ~ Fraser area. In addition, the society will provide a Heritage Service Programme for the citizens of the communities it serves as well-as for visitors to our area. Aside from innovative, informative and exciting displays in the Museum, this Programme will consist of an Archives available to those who wish to do historical research on the area; and an Adult Extension Programme consisting of lectures, workshops and seminars designed to help increase awareness of the area's heritage. Finally, with the Ministry of Education's determin- ation that more emphasis be Placed on local history in our schools, the Burrard ~ Fraser Heritage Society will provide a School Programme for the students of District 43, which will help them to a greater understanding and appreciation of their heritage. The extent to which these programmes will be imple- “mented shall, of course, be contingent on the level of funding the society will receive. In order to provide a museum, and to produce and maintain the programmes described above, the new Heritage Society will require a paid professional staff, and the active and ongoing support of the communities it serves. We would like to send a small delegation to your meet- ing of April29th to answer any questions on the activities and objectives of the Society. We hope you will assist us in providing this vital service to the people of the Burrard - Fraser area. nN Yours Sincerely, , Cro. (Biki x Wine ang , J (Mrs.) Betty Gidlof, Secretary
