School board to assess any extra fees here By DUSTIN QUEZADA .- THE COAST MOUNTAINS School District will be complying with a BC Supreme Court ruling that deems schoo! fees illegal under the school act. Exactly how the local district will comply is unknown but superintendent Rob Green- ' wood did say any moves made would be ret- roactive to Sept. 30 - the day after the court ruling. “Schools will have to hold ¢ conversations,” said Greenwood, adding opinions. will. be - sought from teachers, students, administra- tors “and parents, ; District administrators have asked the individual, schools to submit reports, detail- ing the fees they are charging and how many students are paying them by Dec. 22, Every year, schools file reports with the fees they . are charging but, Greenwood says that isn’t enough to tell how many fees are being col- _ lected. “We want to know what fees are being charged. and how many (of those charges) wet! result in us having to look at our bud- ;” Greenwood said. . Admistrators will then use the informa- ° tion from the individual schools to complete a district report for trustees in time for the January school board meeting. The Ministry of Education decided against appealing the decision, putting the onus on individual dis- tricts to adjust school fees. School boards cannot charge fees for any course, including an elective, if that course is providing credits leading to graduation. The court also considered fees for field trips — _ and ruled they can’t be charged if the excur- sions are mandatory or needed for successful * completion of a course. “Once a student enrolls in any course, it’s their education program to graduation,” said Greenwood at the November school board meeting. “A lot of people are concerned about what this’ means to course offerings. ” School boards can continue to charge fees for the purchase of paper, writing tools, _ Student planners, exercise books, computer diskettes and other school equipment for a ‘student’s personal use.
