His father later transferred to Vancouver to work with the CN, and retired there. While Jack was still work- ing in McBride, he met his future wife Rose. Rose had come to McBride to teach, and was fresh out of school in Burnaby. Jack and Rose were married on July 24 in 1936, in a Baptist church in Van- couver, A few years later the couple left McBride and moved to Vancouver, Jack joined the Vancouver police force, and was with them untif he joined the war effort and went overseas. While Jack was at war, Rose went to work for BC Electric as a conductor on the Vancouver street cars. Rose worked there until after the war, when Jack retumed home. He also went to work for BC Elec- tic, which had now become BC Transit, driving a street car. Sometimes Rose and Jack would work together, Jack as the driver and Rose as the conductor. Later Jack switched over to Pacific Stage Lines and started driving a bus. In 1952 the couple moved to Cultus Lake — Jack remained a bus driver and Rose went back to teaching. While there Jack met Jim McDuff, who owned a log- ging truck, In 1953 Jack quit the bus lines, bought a used logging truck, and started hauling logs for a Chilliwack log- ging contractor. The oldest Cliff had graduated from high school by this time, and Gerry finished his schooling in Terrace at the Skeena High School. He probably saw a lot of his mother, since Rose took a job teaching at high school too. She taught a special pre-occupational class. She placed one of her students in a local ladies clothing store — The McGrath's KeeVee Shop. The shop interested her so much that she bought the Store in 1967 and renamed in Rose's, and ran it until 1972, As you all know this year the store, under owner Deb- bie Caruthers, closed its doors. In 1971 Jack, sold his trucking business —— Shar- ples Trucking -— to his sons Cliff and Gerry. They had already Deen in business since 1961 with Sharples Equipment. Jack and Rose moved from Terrace in 1972, and retired in Penticton, And last July the family gathered. at their Penticton home to celebrate their 60th anniversary, with five grandchildren and one great granddaughier in at- lendance.
