UNBC sets new goals ENCOURAGING MORE northerners to attend univer- sity and greatly increasing the number of first nations students are among the Uni- versity of Northern B.C.’s newly revised goals. Staff at UNBC engaged in some navel gazing recently as they tried to figure out what role the university should play in the future, A preliminary report by the UNBC planning com- imittce lays out the direction the university intends to go: Wi Main programs to be nat- ural resources management, environmental studies, first nations studics, resource- based tourism, northem community health, northern and aboriginal social work, and northem studies. Wi Target to have 3,000 full- time equivalent (FTE) un- dergraduate students and 500 FTE graduate students by the year 2001, Since not all students are full time, this would likely mean a to- tal of about 5,000 students, Currently UNBC has about 2,300 students, or 1,700 FTE students. M@ Increase the northem B.C. post-secondary partici- pation rate to at least the provincial average. Qua- druple the post-secondary participation rates of first nations students. WM Make it possible to com- plete a general arts degree in the northwest region, and offer a professional program here. M3 Make regional enrollment 20 per cent af UNBC’s overall enrollment. M@ Triple the number of scholarships and bursaries over the next five years, . WW Develop three to six UNEC research institutes, (Currently UNBC has the Northern BC Child Welfare Research Centre and the Northern Land Use In- stitute), Fee speaks out TERRACE'S Tammy Fee took her message about the impact of stalking and of violent crime and has told it to the whole province. Fee was attacked by Ric White last June. He broke into her home, handcuffed her and sexually assaulted her. White was sentenced this January to two years in prison for the crime. Fee is slowly taking back her fife, and part of that pro- cess has been trying to let more people know about what victims of this type of crime go through. She did television inter- views and spoke with a major Vancouver daily newspaper. “The word is getting out there,” she said of her trip to Vancouver. ‘I'm taking something horrific and trying to turn it around,” She also wants to let other women who might right now live in [ear of a stalker that they can turn to other people for help. “The victim has to be heard,'’ she says. ‘‘Listen, and don’t tum away no mat- ter who the stalker is, or how prominent he is in the community.” Through a support group in Vancouver, Fee also plans to bring her concems to the attorney general this June. She's hoping for changes to criminal law to give victims more rights. Fee is also hoping to start & support group in Terrace © for women who have been In violent relationships. w It’s alive!
