Repap Smithers Ltd. is dedicated to
the production of high quality umber
Products.

The former D. Grool Lagging Lid, was
Purchased by Repap in 1987. in
November, 1988, the mill began to shift
its production emphasis to the offshore
market —~ in perticutar, Japan — and
away from the North American market
it used to concentrate on,

To do so, an extensive modernization
Program was undertaken at the sawmill
that included bringing in a new
debarker. two climate controlied
operater booths and linear pastioners
for ail fhe movable saws. A packaging
machine Is also on order that will further
enhance the marketability of the
menufactured products.

The result is that this mill now ships
about 80 per cent of what Il makes to
Japan and has become firmly and
credibly ostabiished with o number of
clients in that country.

The town of Smithers has certainly
been one of the beneficiaries of this suc-
cess. Fulltime employment in the mill
now stands at 96 people (an increase
of 15 since Repap took over). The com:
pany hos also just donated the wooden
roof for tha new community swimming
pool. A special run at the mill resulled
in the high grade centre-match stock
that was required,

As for the futuro, General Menager
Wayne Haw explained thot the whole

Repap Smithers gives it tha flexibility
heeded ta become less vulnerable to
market cycles. That should translate In-
fo stability and tong term employment
for the residents of the Bulkley Valley,
