A very busy weekend held down the roster of entrants to 23 runners as the annual King-of-the-Mountain .foot race started at 9 a.m. on July 31 at the Terrace Arena. Colin Parr + (left) and Richard Harrison walked back to the finish line together after completion of thelr annual King-of- the-Mountain run on July 31. Harrison broke Parr’s record by four seconds in placing first. Parr wound up second. You might say that Smithers’ Richard . Harrison owns the King-of-the-Mountain foot race. The speedster from up the line won for an unprecedented fifth time in the 12-year race history on July 31, and he set a new record by four seconds over the previous mark set just last year by Terrace’s Colin Parr. Harrison had earlier victories for the five-mile jaunt in 1983, 84, 785, and 86. Parr broke his string last year by winning his se- cond King-of-the-Mountain race. His first was in 1981. Harrison’s °86 time was 35 minutes, 4] seconds. Last year Parr came along and set a new mark of 35.33. But Harrison was back in form for ’88 .and lowered the mark to 35,29. Organizer Neil Fleischmann told runners at the awards presentation that they’d likely ~ see another record next year as plans are afoot to change the runoff portion from the moun- tain enroute to the finish line. Disappointment was express- ed, along with reasons, for the poor turnout of only 23 com- petitors. . Fleischmann said many would-be competitors were tied up at the B,C, Summer Games in Victoria, plus numerous B.C. Day celebrations in ‘Terrace and area. in the open women’ s section, veteran Sué Simpson crossed the line first in 46.50. She placed Harrison5-timeking fourth overall behind Harrison, Parr, and Dean McLay. Bill Nannings won the masters men’s section in 63.20, The masters women’s group went to Marilyn Earl in 60.59. Simpson said her winning time for the ladies was well off her best and about three minutes shy of the record held by Maureen Sargent of Hazelton. The brother and sister com- bination of Jon and Karen Shepherd each won their 10 to 13 age division. Jon was eighth — overall in 51.16. Karen was ‘12th in 58,34, Lemuel Russell ran at 58.37 which was tops for the 14 to 16 age group. Allen Casey of New Hazelton was timed at 51.25 for the 17 to 19 section. . A sidelight to the race is that Don Sissons of Kitimat arrived seven minutes late at the starting line. However, he took off and came in with a time of 63.57. If Sissons had started on time, he would have placed about 12th, He still managed 17th position. A complete list of this Skeena | Valley Runner’s Club event can be found in this week's Scoreboard.
