Ranger Cooper was’ soon on the job with his .| crew anda pump... Early in the after- noon there were hopes of the {ire be- ing extinguished, but, a couth breeze picked up embers and started spot fires outside the fire lines, By even- ing it had covered a considerable area, and low humidity and wind made fire fighting very difficult. Late in the afternoon Cooper made nrrangements for the mill crew of Little, Haugland & Kerr and Foreman Benny Agar’s crew of young foresters to be on the job at day. break next a. m. Saturday afternoon the wind did some changing and swung the fire to- wards Spring Creek and by evening the north fire line was. comparatively to extending a fire line nlong the west and’ south of the flames. Agar's men did splendid work, especially consider- ing that they ure all young fellows in their apprenticeship ‘stage. But then Benny is'a good foreman and knows his job too. :When fire gets going and along with the fickleness of the wind, there is no telling what will happen, and on Sun- day afternoon the wind shifted again to the north west and started the fire off at a merry clip. towards Spring | Creck. Considerable damage was the result here. In the evening’ Ranger Cooper found J. Seigfried had put himself to work at a dangerous spot and had cut a line himself -to -hold the flames in’ check, .| see what be could do and‘ finding no ane at that particular spot he started in himself with tools he had brought Cooper joined him and shortly after Bruce Hill came by and ‘the three of them ‘completed the line. By Monday evening the fire was pretty well under’ control and no mer- chantable timber bad been touched. A lot of credit is due Ranger Cooper and his men.
