Composting ‘wastes’ is a double-barreled enerpy saver. By throwing aut Tess you reduce the energy cast of transportation and disposal of those solid wastes. By making your own fertilizer you save enér- gy by replacing fossil fuel based fertilizer with compost. Composting jis the breaking down of dead vegetable ar ani- mal matter into humus amd plant nutrients (a “natural” fertilizer) VENTILATION HOLES WASTE? (1F-20em) which are needed by all plants for growth. Not only is com- posting. easy but, ‘contrary to popular belief, there need not be any offensive adour. Thereare as many methods for composting as theré are garden- ers. Just remember, n what’ you do, no matter how many ‘mistakes’ you make, you will probably still produce rea- sonably good, usable compost. .6 Steps To Successful Campasting 1. Choose a location — be sure it is well drained. 2. Build the bin —a container about one cubic metre is sufficient for an average sized family. — Use plywoad, chicken wite or a garbage pail (preferably metal) — whatever is convenient. If you use chicken wire, the oul- side of the pile dries and must oc- casianally be tusned to the centre. : — make sure there are holes in the container for air circu- lation — 3 cm in diameter and spaced 15-20 cm apart. Ifusinga ~ P P z should not add any new material, parbage can, cut holes in the bot- tom and set it on bricks to ensure adequate drainage. . 3. Collect the wastes — use kitchen wastes, inctud- ing coffee grounds, tea bags and egg shells. Avoid meat and dairy products — they. attract vermin, Vacuum cleaner contents and hair can also be composted; — collect garden. refuse. Avoid weed seeds, and diseased plants. Do not add grass, which has been recently treated with ‘weed killer, to the compost pile. — in the winter, keep your Kitchen wastes outdoors in a gar- bage can. After the wastes thaw in the spring, they can be added to the compost bin. 4, Build the pile — spread the wastes on the pile in jayers about 15-20 cm thick. those- no malter . Soil -, — between each layer, sprink-.. le a few shovels of soil aver the: . surface. 5 Maintenance: vas an — water occasionally, ‘espe- cially in dry weather. The com: . -post should be damp like a .wrung-oul “sponge — not soaking wel. 6. Using The Compost — The compost, except , for the recent addilions on fop, should be ready within two or three months. It will. be dark. brown to black and will closely resemble soil; -— dig compost into the gar- -. den or use it as a mulch; — soak it in water and make compost ‘tea’ for hause, plants. For Impatient Composters (improved compost in a shorter time for. a little extra work) This method is basically the same as the first with the failow- - ing exceptions: -— Chop waste into smal! pieces. — Use layers of wood chips, sawdust, dry leaves or shredded - newspaper instead of soil. If you choose newspaper, use only the black and white pages as the col- ” cured ink may contain toxle chemicals. Use 2 cm of this soil “gubstitute’’ to &.cm kilchen or -garden wastes. — Build a solid base in your compost bin to retain the liquid . nutrients, — Turn the pile every two or three days. — The pile may get 100 hat to touch! (This heat will kill weed . seeds and insects.) The compost is ready when the pile has cooled down.. The impatient composter bul stockpile wastes for the next - compost, Store kitchen wastes iiiged- With inbistite absorbers such as woad shavings, newspa-: pers, or sawdust during the win- ter or until the next batch. Depending on such factors as the weather, and materials used, your compost can be ready j in-a month and will contain more nutrients than the slower com-.. posting method.’ For Lazy Compasters if you can’t or don’t want a compost pile, simply dig food wastes into the ground, leaving that part of the garden fallow for ane year. Whichever method you choose, you are helping to reduce Canada’s energy consumption. Remember those energy savings do add up. Pitch-In ‘80 Keep Canada .
