SITUATED AT thi? antrance to the campground in the Lava Bed Memorial Park in the Nass Valley, this interpretive centre is closed because of budget cuts, Provincial parks and Nisga’a officials are looking at ways to re-open the centre to provide information for visitors ta the Nass Valley. Ways sought to open closed park centre PROVINCIAL PA.RKS of- ficials hope to ony day re- open the closed interpre- tive centre at the Lava Bed Memorial Pzirk in the Nass Valley. The centre was shut this year because of provincial budget cuts. “We're lookirig at ways to get revenue to sustain it, for it to be se2if-sustain- ing down the road,” said provincial parks official Jamie Hahn. Built with the help of a Forest Renewal B.C. grant and opened in 1997, the interpretive ceritre is con- structed in the style of a longhouse and. is situated at the entrance to the memorial park’s 16-site campground jist west of the ‘Y’ intersection on the lava plain in the Nass Val- ley. It even has a source of power from «solar panels because there is no elec- trical service in the area. “We've been talking with the Nisga’a Lisims Government and hope to come up with some options,” said Hahn. “We've also talked to the campground operator. He’s putting together a bu- siness plan and we hope to get together with him.” A possible scenario could feature items and services heing sold at the centre that complement the park’s offerings, Hahn added. He said there was never any parks budget to staff the centre. What parks of- ficials did receive every year was money to hire people under an environ- mental youth grant pro- gram which has now been cancelled. The memorial park was created in the 1990s and is jointly managed by the provincial government and 1.8L, 4 cylinder, 130 HP,-VVT-i engine, ‘SAUltra Lowskrnissiong Vehicle (ULEV), automatic transmission, fuel economy 8.1/5.8 L/100 km 35/49 mpg City/Hwy, | AM/FM CD, remote keyless entry, colour-keyed bumpers, full wheel covers, 60/40 split rear seat, splash guards.
