B4 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 4, 2000 Couple married 65 years can’t believe how quickly years passed HELEN GIBBS gently clasps her husband Fred’s left hand and casts a fond glance in his direction as she says their 65 years of marriage have been ‘ “wonderful.” The pair married in Ter- tace back in 1935. “Honestly, I can’t ima- ging where the time has gone,” Helen says. She credits their endur-.- ing marriage to strong faith and their mutual love for one another. Helen grew up in the prairies but moved to Ter- race with her family in 1927, She’s lived here ever since. Her father worked in George Liltle’s sawmill. One night a young man named Frank came by the mill. Helen’s father brought him home. Frank became a fre- quent visitor to the house- hold, and began working at the mill. She still remembers her wedding day. Although there was a Pentecostal church in Terrace in those days, Helen opted for a less conventional setting for the wedding. “T was too scared to go to the church and I said, From B2 Vil just get a ‘Well, no, married at home. The Gibbs have two grandchildren, including Tammy, who now lives with Helen. ’ Fred, a hardworking man who went on to be- come a self-employed carpenter, plumber -and bricklayer, suffered a stroke three years ago. He now lives at Terraceview Lodge. Helen visits him every day. They spend their time in the solarium, a sunny, warm room with inviting, comfortable chairs, On Sept. 25, the couple celebrated their 65th wed- ding anniversary. “The Lord has been so good to us,” she says.
