More than 100 people have been out of work for more than ihree years when Westar closed its mill. The Gitwangak band :sub- sequently bought the mill but the number of people working there has been cut and it docsn’t have a secure timber supply. In making the announcement, Skeena NDP MLA Helmut Gies- brecht said the emphasis is on retraining for jobs that require more skills. “Log scaling, upgrading math and English skills is all part of the equation," he said. The money will last for six months and during that time laid off workers will get instruction through Northwest Community College. Already, other laid off workers have been retrained through fed- eral employment money and a good percentage have found employment. ; “This is net job creation,’ said Giesbrecht of the Skills Now 380,000 program, ‘‘This is educa- tion to improve skills."” The training will take place in Atco trailers belonging to the Gitwangak Education Socicty.
