q uF i Poisoning prompts health unit probe ’ The apparent overspraying of the herbicide Roundup by a Kiti- mat. contractor has outraged ten- arits who were not warned of the | spraying, and the incident ‘brought renewed protest from the Skeena Society to Oppose Pesticides (STOP). According to Dr. David Bow- ering, the Chief Medical Officer for the Skeena Health Unit, the applicator was employed by the- owner of the Golden Town- ‘houses apartments to apply the herbicide around the perimeter of. the building. . | He said tenants of the build- ing told him the herbicide had been applied with a commercial sprayer on a windy day, and although they could see. the spray blowing and could smell the fumes, they were generally unprepared for the application of the herbicide. Bowering said residents have complained that they received no notice of the spraying, and many children who were playing: outside at the time have since complained of iliness. “Tm not aware of anybody | being sick enough to be hospital- ized but children have been sick with symptoms like headaches, nose bleeds and vomiting,”’ he said. ‘‘To this point, I’ve heard of nine individuals with symp- toms, and there may be more. - *I’ve basically been trying to ‘reassure people a little bit. I _ know that they’ve been a little. frightened and some of them are. concerned about things like can- cer or thinking that their build- ings are going to be contaminat- éd for a long time. But I think those scenarios are pretty unlike- -ly,’’ Bowering said. He added, however, that most people were less concerned about the effects of the herbicide than they were about what-they- felt was a violation of their rights as tenants. ‘‘They had no warning, and they didn’t get a chance to explore alternatives,’’ he said. ~ Bowering said Kitimat Coun- cil had asked for a report on any possible medical consequences Terrace centre for private prac- tice, was a physiotherapist at the Terrace centre for 11 years and said she would continue in that role as well.as offering any re- quired training to new: physio-. therapists who had not worked of the spraying incident, as well as some background informa- § | NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING — tion on the herbicide Roundup. He said he had sent question- naires to all the tenants and re- quested that all Kitimat doctors report. any illnesses which may be linked.to the spraying. “Pll compile those statistics and hope to give Kitimat Council a report prior to their next meeting,’’ he said. ee a Bowering said that Roundup was “relatively low in terms of ‘toxicity’? and said it was con- sidered to be safe by Agriculture Canada following tests in which | samples of the herbicide were in- . § jected into the skin of 50 volun- teers who apparently suffered no ill effects from the chemical over a period of several months. He said -the main use of © Roundup was in the agricultural | industry and that the chemical could be applied to a field to kill weeds and planting could take place only a few days later with. § no effect on the crop, But even though Roundup. appeared to — lose its herbicidal effect rapidly, Bowering said that the remain- . ing chemical apparently binds to the soil and any long-term effect | | it may have on mammals is still not clear. Bob Brown, Co-chairman of STOP, was more critical of the spraying incident and more skeptical of safety claims by Monsanto, the manufacturer of the chemical. . ‘The whole spray area is right next to a park. There’s kids run- ning around it in ‘bare feet and they’re playing in water that’s run-off from the area that was sprayed.”’ . Brown said that the residents ‘were outraged. ‘‘They had no notification, they didn’t know what they were dealing with, they had sick kids on their .. hands, and the applicator said the herbicide was as safe as table salt. . ‘‘And that’s a claim that you cannot make,’’ he said. ‘The safety of Roundup is very much under a cloud. It’s very much a © questionable chemical,’’ he said. . 7 Network —" continued from page 2 ‘tion as administrator for the with children. .
