\ ‘Soviet rescue _ vessel —TRIBUNE PHOTOS The Soviet freighter Captain Lyubchenko docked at Vancouver’s Pier B-C last week for repairs to her stern upper decks, damaged during a dramatic rescue effort Feb. 28 in the North Pa- cific off the coast of Alaska. The Lyubchenko’s captain answered an SOS from the South Korean cargo ship Dae Rim which was en- gulfed in flames following a hatch fire. Although hampered by heavy snow and four metre waves, the Soviet ship pulled alongside the burning vessel and lowered one of its lifeboats, instructing one of the Korean seamen to board to test the boat. But in a desperate bid to escape the flames, more than 20 crew members rushed aboard, capsizing the boat. With lifelines and rafts, the Soviet crew was able to rescue three — one of whom, the captain, died on board the Lyubchenko — but the 23 remaining crew members died in the three degree waters. Chief mate of the Captain Lyubchenko, Alexander Tsvetaev is still haunted by events as he and other crew members were helpless to save the Korean seamen.
