pris 4 Mudslingers Have Tea Keith Snyder of the Urasenke Tea Foundation recently presenced a fascinating view of Japanese cea culture at Mudslinger Clay Studios, The workshop began with a slide presentation, focusing on the earliest tea culeure in Japan. Following the historical segment, a team of six kimorw clad women performed the tea ceremony on tatam mats brought to the studio tor che occasion. As the women wene through the meticulous movements of the ceremony, Keith explained che reasons for precision, discussed the philosophical aspects of tea and talked about each of che implements used. After the formal presenration, all the workshop participants were served tea with sweets, in bowls from Keith's collection. He had wide-mouthed summer tea bowls, kutsu (shoe-style) Oribe bowls, Shino and one very distiner bowl of local clay and glaze materials made by Yukio Yamamoto. The second section of the workshop was a slide presentation and an in-depth look at the tea bowls of Japan ranging from early in the 15th cencury co che present day. Keith talked about the important role of China and Korea in bringing about the tea culture in Japan. He also discussed the unpertant apincual wapect of fen and tative Shinto influences that ude dhe ceremony uniquely Japanese. This part of the workshop focused speciiteally on bow! style and anatomy. He carefully explained the more than ten different parts of a cet bowl, which are distinct in each, style ot bowl. There were over 50 examples in slides and 10 bowls broughe to the studies for Pattecrpants to experience directly. Keith Snyder is a tea master who studied ac the Urasenke Foundation in Japan for nine yars before returning co Canada, He is a commuted advocate of the ceremony as a way of spirirual refreshmene”. Keith ceaches the tea ceremony three days a week ac the Unisenke Foundation on West 13th. The public is welcome and encouraged to participare in a rea ceremony by making an appointment with Keith at 224 - 1560, This workshop was nothing short of exhilarating -in a very Zen sort of a way.
