CHRISTMAS REPORT The long awaited first Christmas show under the Made of Clay flag has been launched and sailed through all the chal- lenges with accolades from many quar- ters, The Roundhouse was well liked by most of thet participants who appear eager torepeal the expenence next year. Indeed, I believe I am not alone in saying that it exceeded expectatrons! [ts central Loca- ton provided easy access [rom anywhere in the lower mainland; underground park- ing facilities were superb and at $5.00 per day was a bargain; lighting mted highly although inevitably there were a few defi- cient areas, Both unloading and packing went smoothly with access from several quarters. The Roundhouse staff was ae commddating, assisting in the music, light- ing, providing tables and other needed supplies. The exhibiting room atthe Round- house is an attractive room although mat quite as ideally located within the complex. asane might like, bat with sandwich boards strategically located we appeared to have little trouble in attracting our markel. In fact we benefited from other events in the Centre. Exhibitors very much appreciated the spaciousness without draperies; the absence of a grid-like layout in the room invited Visitors loexplore more atlentively. Over one-half of respondents indicated that sales met or exceeded expectations. There were some downsides as well; un- fortunately we didn’t get it all nght with the first attempt! Mare banners and street exposure is required, A last minute re- vamping of the layout and the entrance proved to be annoying to several of our members. In the future, we must set up more street signage and possibly attract a Co-Sponsar bo imereasc attendance. [noone tothe Guild was not as great as one would hope; we must draw a much larger attend- ance lo keep our booth fees low, Our objective in providing another venue like the Roundhouse for our members wis and is two-fold: itcreates another sales and educational opportunity; and by inereas- ing the revenues of the Guild it enables us to affer more scholarships, Guild events and liaison with our fellow potters. Ron Feicht Show Chair January 2000 MADEOFCLAY SPRING MAY 5 - 7, 2000 It appears thal one show is just concluded when another one is pending! This kind of momentum can only add to the dynamics of the Guild, We should inleed maintain a high public visibility; ceramic art, in its diversity, is so appropriate to every lifestyle that we, as ils progenitors, are in the forefront of present day arts movement. Made of Clay will be held from May 5 to7. This will be the seventh annual show. In past years the application form has been included in the November issue of the Newsletter; wedelayed this announcement so that there was no confusion between the fall and spring shows. Onoee again the site is at Performance Works, 1218 Cartwnght Street, Granville Island. A number of changes have been planned for this event. Firstly, there will be only 20 Booths available at $400 each; this is $50) less than in prior years. When have you last heard of prices declining! Something new, as an outgrowth of our recent Christmas Show, is that there will be 10 [Islands renting at $150. All Booths are 10° x10); Islands are SxS. Asin the past, Booths will be draped on three sides, 8' high. [slands will mot be enclased by drapery; the users of these spaces may exercise their own creativity in how they Wish to create their display but they must abide by the 5'x5' perimeter. This layout will provide essentially the same revenue to the Guild as last spring's show, This 1s important as We intend to feature a very ambitious promotion. We wall print at least 15,000 announcement cards and possibly 20,000if we can otain a favourable price. This is in contrast to 4,500 printed for our lates! show and this past spring. These cards will feature a map of the [sland to assist in finding our site. A bulk mailout to selected areas should ensure that our most likely customer base is aware of our event. There will be the usual (wo large display ads in the Georgia Straight which rates very highly on our questioning of visitors to our Christmas show. In addition, we will have a display table available to us for the full week without cost in Granville Market. This is the first time that this information outlet has been avaijable t us and should resolve many of the complaints of past events. We require volunteers to staff this throughout the week. We have requested once again the same site, Ocean Place, to feature our highly successful Raku-U, This will enable us todirect traffic to Performance Works. Throwing and decorating demonstrations will again occur adjacent bo our show, An Application Form is included in this Newsletter and should be completed as soon as passible. Forms will be date-stamped upon receipt at the Gallery. [n the event of aver- subscripuion, the earliest date will prevail. Please enclose your non-refundable deposit cheque dated February 15 with your application: $150 for a Booth; $75 for an [sland. Cheques dated March 15 for the balance should also be included: $250 (Booth); $75 (Island). Enclose a separate cheque for Rental Supplies (as required) dated March 15.
