A2- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, June 19, 2002 VOLUNTEERS work filling sandbags at Jutta Smeltzer’s (below) Queensway Dr. home. In 1999, thigh high flood water infiltrated her yard. Thanks to build- ing a makeshift wall out of sandbags around her home no water damage was incurred. She’s hoping the preventative measure will work again this year. From front Sandbagging under way “Hopefully this one’s not as bad,” Smeltzer said. In 1999 she placed thousands of sand- bags in a makeshift wall surrounding her house which prevented the water from breaching her home. She’s hoping the preventative mea- sures will work equally well this year. “We've got that advantage because we're starting early,” Smeltzer said. Water levels on the Skeena rose more than 64 centimetres from June 13-15, emergency response officials said. By Saturday a reception centre had been established at the Terrace Arena to provide assistance to people who had left their homes and to coordinate much nee- ded volunteers to help with emergency response. Officials were desperate for volunteers to help with sandbagging in the Terrace area, ; Some local Ranges nos my were q swer the call helping with sandbagging ; at Smeltzer’s property last weekend along with some of her neighbours and friends. Terrace emergency program coordina- tor Randy Smith said sustained high le- vels of fast moving water is causing ero- sion along the banks of the Skeena, The water is undercutting the banks making the riverside very unstable and prone to breaking. Curious onlookers are being asked to stay away from the banks of the swelling river. “A lot of peaple are going to the bank _,to see what it’s doing,” Smith said. “They “gould inadvertently fall in to the river, and with how fast the water is flowing right “now the chance of survival is low.” Debris such as logs and even sizable trees in the river combined with a low water temperature make the river especi- ally dangerous, Smith advises residents to keep them- selves, their children and their pets well away from the water line. “Considering the condition of the banks people should stay away,” he said.
