Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 23, 1998 City supports the market Dear Sir: There scems to be some misin- formation going around conceming the Farmers Market and its future. Please allow me to try and address this subject. _At the August 7th Cily Council Committee meeting some problems with the present location’ of the market were brought to our attention. These problems included parking, traffic congestion and the ‘Horse & Buggy”’ operation. This encouraged the council to start discussing the long term future for the market. It was felt that. possible alternate sites should be looked at and an ongoing dialogue be continued with the market representatives on the subject, as the City does not feel the Davis site is the best location for the only term. It was also recommended that the City of Terrace go on record as strongly supporting the economic and other benefits provided to the com- munity by the Farmers Market, Most of Council, including myself would not want the market moved if it would - injure the economic well being of the vendors, At the meeting held September 11th it was brought to my attention, by Lynne Christiansen, that 1 (Councillor Rich McDaniel) said the Market never contributes a bean to the City. I denied that. This is what I have said and will say again-the market has 70 vendors far one Business License. Cost $250. This CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail! Bag elected to see that the citizens of Ter- race get ihe best possible use of their tax dollars but at no time did I say the Market did not contribute to Terrace. The market is often my destination on Saturday for the purchase of baking, produce and to socialise. There was a notice in the newspaper saying the skateboard park was going to be located at the present site of the Farmers Market, That was never a fact nor could it have been as the drainage there is not adequate. Yes alternate sites are being looked at for the Farmers Market by the Plan- ning and Economic Departments of our City. Again I hope the apparent misinformalion ceases so the people concerned can meet and discuss what would be most beneficial to Terrace and its tax payers. Rich McDaniel city councillor We'll follow you Dear Sir: As a big fan of the Farmer’s Market, I want to applaud city council and es- pecially Rich McDaniel for working hard to meet the needs of both the city present location, based solely on a Statement that if it were moved, the new location would be too far away for senior citizens to walk to. 1 gather this is not the case, as several downtown locations are being consid- ered, So maybe my name should be removed from that petition. I take extreme exception to Stefka Haigh’s insulting remarks against skateboarders and youth in her letter supporting the Farmer’s Market, Ob- viously she forgets that these youth are the future of our community and deserve our support. To the vendors, I plead that you en- ter into a constructive dialogue with the City, you have tremendous sup- port for your Market, This support is not based on location, Ft’s the wonder- ful people, the veggies, the delicious foods, Howers and crafts which make the Market. If you move, we'll still come see you! Marianne Weston Terrace, B.C, Try curling rink Dear Sir: I’m not on the committee, but am a patron of the farmers’ market. I wauld Jike to offer a suggestion for the new location if the market needs to relocate. What about Terrace’s curling rink? What are the facilities used for when there isn’t curling going on? Tt offers shelter from the weather and has a large parking lot, too. needs to be addressed. ’ and the market vendors.
