Vet joins fight to save bears Petition to end bear hunting A LOCAL veterinarian has volunteered to collect signa- tures for a petition to end bear hunting in the province. Dr. David Farkvam of the Terrace Veterinary Clinic is collecting the signatures to force the provincial govern- ment into holding a province-wide referendum to ban bear hunting in BC. Farkvam has until December 9 to collect signatures for the petition. A minimum of 10 per cent of the registered voters in each of the province’s 75 electoral districts need to sign up to force a referendum. In the Skeena district, that means more than 1,700 names are needed. “Farkvam isn’t--quite that ambitious, but he’s confi- dent that he will be able to get 500 signatures. ‘Tve been meeting my goal of 10 names each . day,” he says. “‘If I get 50 ‘a week, I?ll be happy.” Farkvam says that his main reason for getting in- volved is to prevent a rise in bear poaching that could result from an increasingly affluent Asian market. ore “Tt’s a case of supply and David Farkvam demand,’” he says. ‘They are running out of bears over there, so the demand here will increase. And the prices they’re commanding for gall bladders and bear paws will entice more people to poach.”’ Farkvam himself doesn’t see any need for legal bear bunting. As a child growing up in a very poor family, he remembers having to eat bear meat that had been given to his family. “We ate it, but il’s not the nicest stuff, It’s very gamey,”’ he says. “‘To me, it’s a step up from a dog. What’s the pur- pose of killing a bear other than to hang its head on the wall?” Farkvam says that he’s running into both proponents and opponents of a ban. He frequently canvasses offices, where the split runs 50/50, But sometimes he says nobody in an office will sign the petition because they don't want to tock the baat. “LT went into one business where there was an avid hunter,’ Farkvam says. ‘When he refused to sign the peti- tion, no one else would, either,’” Farkvam will continue to canvass for signatures, bul he’s not looking for a debate. “Vm not going to get in any arguments, although there’s lots of people who want to,’’ he says. “‘They’re not going to sway me. I'll just keep plugging along.”’ school, park land gets reconfigured THE CITY OF Terrace and School District 88 have joined forces to sell off some land, and use the money to work on parks and school ficids. The land in question is located on the north side of the bench, and is bordered by Dairy, Munroe and Eby. It’s a parcel of almost 24 acres, The northern 11 acres along Dairy had been dedicated for school use, while the city had about 13 acres reserved for park land on the southern half. The city and the school district got together and decided to redraw the acreage, essentially cutting It in half east to west, instead of north to south. They moved the school property so it would border Mun- roe and whal may become Gair Ave. And the park site would now be bordered by Eby and the future Gair, That teft a skinny strip 100ft wide, by 1,343ft long along Dairy Ave. That's Jatid the city and school district have agreed to split into 17 city-sized lots, and to sell off for an estimaled profit of $315,000, , The land in question, about 3.74 acres, came from the land zoned, but not dedicated. as park land, No school properly was involved in the deal. The deal means that Dairy Ave, will be paved, and that Munroe will be widened and paved. Lots will go on sale this spring, and revenue generated from sales will be put in a jointly administered fund.
