Rod Arnold TERRACE — The. -Kitimat- Stikine regional district and the City of Terrace both support a - proposal for the northwest to ‘become a major forestry educa- tion centre. Rod Arnold, aregistered pro- — fessional. forester whosé com- pany is based in Terrace, told the local governments a forestry faculty should be established at. the Northwest Community Col- lege as. part of a proposed nor- thern university. A major feature of the pro- , ject would be the establishment of five -‘‘research and ‘demonstration forests,” each of approximately 2, 500ha, he said. Prince... Rod Arnold, who is looking for support for his idea, says lit- tle research has been done on northern tree species, Decisions on managing nor- thern forests are instead based on results of studies carried out _elsewhere, Arnold continued. ‘The problem is compounded as some northern cross species are unique to the region, “We can do a better job than we're doing right now,’? Arnold said, adding the proposed facul- ty would ultimately help bring about an improvement. Arnold’s proposal calls. for . using research-demonstration forests covering coastal to in- terior species in addition to an. ff academic setting. “Their education is of minimal value (because) it’s not backed up by practical ex- perience,”’ he said of forestry > graduates trained elsewhere who are now working in the north. Amoi said he finds it frustrating to watch techniques being used in local woodlands “‘knowing full well they're wrong right from the start.”” Arnold added that while the College of New Caledonia in | Prince George does have a forestry education program, it is devoted to interior situations and not to coastal situations. That means graduates have to be retrained for work in: the coastal woodlands, he said.
