Tale of a young healer

Nicknamed ‘‘Wise Chiid’’ by her cousins because she is not quite
like other children, a nine-year-old girl, precocious and a little spoil-
ed, runs with her cousins and lives with her grandmother in the 7th
century kingdom of Dalriada on the island of Mull in the Hebrides.
When her grandmother dies she is adopted by Juniper, a strange
young woman who lives in an isolated cottage and only visits the
village when illness or injury calls on her expertise.

The villagers, especially the village priest, regard Juniper as a
cailieach or witch, but she is really a doran, as Juniper herself ex-
plains — one who knows the way to see or perceive ‘‘the energy —
the pattern”. Gradually Wise Child learns to follow the pattern
- herself, learning to keep herself and everything around her.clean;
discovering the properties of herbs; learning English and Latin,
poetry and mathematics, so that she will be prepared for her life in
the outside world. Wise Child becomes a novitiate doran,
understanding that this depends less on herbs and ointments than
on intelligence, sympathy and intuition.

Before she reaches this point the child must deal with the
malevolent magic of her natural mother, the fear of villager, and
the threat of inquisition from the village priest, all of which place
her and Juniper in dire danger. ‘““Wise Child’’ combines fantasy,
adventure, questions of morality and judgemeni in a strong attrac-
tive story from an experienced writer. ‘‘Wise Child’’ is Monica
Furlong’s first book for young people. It is published by Random.

Whiteside:$21.95) gives a step by step account of the preparation of
site and the construction of a skyscraper. The text, detailed, clear
and effective, is accompanied by a highly successful use of paper
engineering. Bulldozers dig, lifts move workers, glass plates swing
past windows until at last the skyscraper itself rises complete from
the last pages. Along the way Vicki Cobb introduces young readers
to the concept of ‘‘smart’® buildings, and the tradition of hauling up
a tree with the last beam, Why? She tells you that too. ‘Skyscrapers
Going Up” is an interesting and ingeniously designed introduction
to building construction. Text and illustrations are suitable for
children from 6 to 10.
