This was one of the tidbits gleaned from clerks’ offices across , British Columbia as nominations for municipal office in 144 municipalities closed at noon Monday. The lists showed an estimated 470, 000 eligible vaters will be able to choase from among a record 1,302 candidates seeking 666 positions as mayors, aldermen or school trustees i in the voting ll Electors in 45 municipalities will be asked to vate yes or no on . money bylaws or referendums worth about $69 million. Capital Spending on schools would take the biggest chunk at about $37 million. Vancouver last elected public officials in December, 1970, and won't have another round until this time next year. That fact, and the presence of a strong political Establishment in the city, may account for the large number of candidates appearing in surrounding communities. FOUR FOR MAYOR Coquitlam has no fewer than four men running for mayor and 17 for the four aldermanic seats up for grabs. Port Coquitlam also has four candidates for the mayor’s chair, while Burnaby has three men running for mayor and 45 for the five vacant council seats. In the total of 112 mayoralty contests across the province, 49 of the 203 candidates will take office without a fight. These people, of whom 43 are incumbents, were chosen by acclamation. A total of 771 candidates are running for the 383 available aldermanic seats, and another 328 are vying for the 171 school board openings. ‘A number of these seats were filled by ac- clamation.
