WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER Local 1-217 ERS Submitted by LOCAL 1-217 Sunday, December 18th, marked the 12th Annual Christ- mas Party of Local’ 1-217. Back in 1948, when it was ‘| decided to bring together I.W.A. ‘|members and their families ‘to || celebrate Christmas, it was never ‘| dreamed that the party would ‘| grow to the size and scope that ‘| it has now. By today’s standards, | the first annual party, was much smaller. Since that time, it has con- tinued to grow, getting bigger and better as the years go by. Where- as the first year, we gave the children a few candies and an ‘| orange, now each child is given a beautiful, wrapped gift, especi- ally selected to suit his or her age group. Planning Problem Looking back over the years, it has been hard to prejudge what to expect in the way of a turn-out. '}] There have been poor turn-outs ‘||when it has snowed, and there have been overflow crowds. As one could imagine, this calls for a tremendous amount of planning en the part of the Social Com- mittee, who’s job it is to arrange this annual event. This year’s party was held in Vancouvers brand new Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Undoubtedly this was the first time many of our members have ever had a chance to see Vancouver’s newest civic theatre. In fact, there were two parties this year. The first opened at 11:00 am. and the second followed at 2:00. President Thompson, acting as Master of Ceremonies, expressed the appreciation to the member- ship on the tremendous, increased interest in Union affairs and Local ‘| events and introduced the platform guests. Ladies’ Auxiliary He was followed by Mrs. Sheila Pither, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, who brought from the Ladies’ AERO wm Bea EON + re = | THE MANY FINE ACTS held during the stage show put ‘on at the 12th Annual Christmas party ok Local 1-217 Photo ( eh a ONE OF Local 1-217, IWA, December 18, in the Queen Elizebeth Theatre, Vancouver. i ew) k 3 “PRESENT TIME” is always exciting for children and this group clustered around Santa was no exception as they eagerly examine their gifts. The parties went off like clockwork. The Committee started work at 8:00 am. and by 11:00 o’clock were well prepared when the first show opened. Show Well Received The show was well received and a credit to the young people taking part in the show. The morning gift distribution was just completed in time to accommodate the first arrivals for the afternoon show. The afternoon show followed and by 4:30 the parties were over and the committee had finished putting away decorations. As one of the old-time members put it, “This show was excellent, and theatre first class, the presents well chosen, the party itself smoothly organized, and _ the speeches, if any, short. It cer- tainly was a worthwhile day for the membership.” Committee Members Following are the names of the Social Committee whose hard work did so much to make the Christmas Party a success: Marg.
