The year ended on a high note with the Christmas Concert—a lovely
surprise for the many parents and friends in the audience. This year,
the teachers decided to organize a rather special Karaoke evening.
The students serenaded us with Christmas carols while images of a
traditional old-fashioned Christmas were projected on the walls. What
wonderful memories for many of the parents!

We also celebrated the last day of school in a special manner. The
students arrived at school dressed in pyjamas and enjoyed a breakfast
that they prepared themselves. They feasted on chocolate croissants,
fruit, juice, and quiche. Everything went very smoothly in a calm,
relaxed atmosphere, with the older kids serving the meal. Afterward,
there were four Christmas craft activities. The students really deserved
the treat, it was the first time they achieved “100 Acts of Kindness.”

Since September, we have seen far too many confrontations requiring
intervention from teachers and principal, so staff decided to step in
and introduce an Acts of Kindness program. The program is based
on positive actions and there’s only one rule: respect (for oneself,
for others, and for the belongings of others). The students report
each act of kindness that they witness at the school. Each time we
reach 100, a bell rings, regardless the time of day. Then, the students
may select a reward that they receive shortly thereafter, for example,
an extra physical education class, a film, or the Christmas breakfast.
The program has worked extremely well to date. There have been
no visits to the office since the program’s inception. If the students

manage to resolve problems themselves until the
end of June, they will receive an end-of-year
surprise!

Last week, the youngsters got together with the
neighbouring school (which offers French
immersion) to celebrate the Winter Carnival. The
party took place in the rain, but we still had lots of
fun. The students enjoyed games and activities and
helped build a mosaic of coloured ice. They also
performed a song and dance during the opening
ceremony.
