When is enough, enough ? When it's 12% !!

So said the United Nations when it adopted the Report of the
Brundtland Commission. .....

adopted the Report.......

So said the people of Northern Vancouver Island at a Sth of July Town Hall
Meeting, when they unanimously adopted the following Resolutions which were
in turn unanimously endorsed by the Town Council on July 6th.

The Town Hall Meeting sponsored by the Regional District of Mount Waddington,
the Chamber of Commerce, the North Island Citizens for Shared Resources, the
ILW.A. and the Town Council was attended by a standing room only crowd of
over 200 people.

They met to express their concerns at the continuing encroachments on the
working forests and the other resource industries of British Columbia. They say
that it should be enough to preserve the 12% recommended by world
governments.

Their immediate concern is that 12% of Vancouver Island (a separate region
being studied by Stephen Owen's Commission on Resources and Environment) is
already set aside in huge parks such as Pacific Rim, Strathcona, Schoen and Cape
Scott. Much of the rest of the Island is de facto park which has no resource
potential, but is pure wilderness. They object to the Protected Areas Strategy
which would reduce the working forest and resource areas by a total of 36%.

These Resolutions are being sent to every M.L.A., M.P., Municipality, Regional
District, the U.B.C.M., as well as to every Chamber of Commerce and Business
Association in the Province, for endorsement. ,

Our Provincial and Federal Governments need our support. They need to know
that the vast majority of all people support the 12% preservation goal. They
need to know that the goal has been reached already in some
Regions. They need to realize that our Resource-based economy
cannot afford more.
