COUNC THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM JUL 21 1986 MEMORANDUM TO: Be Kirk July 17, 1986 City Administrator FROM: TM. Chong, P. Eng., Deputy City Engineer/Operations Manager SUBJECT: Cost Sharing in Purchase of Blue Recycling Bags Recommendation: That $500.00 be spent from the Environmental Protection Budget for the purpose of purchasing one half of the blue plastic bags needed by S.H.A-R.E. Society to continue the Curbside Racycling Program. Background and Comments: Attached fs: a recent letter forwarded to the Environmental ‘Protection Committee from Mr. Derek Murphy of S.H.A.R.E. Society. The letter ttseif ts self-explanatory. Mr. Murphy made a persona! presentation to the Committee on July 17, 1986. In considering Mr. Murphy'ts letter, the Committee noted that for each ten newspaper recycling days per month, the curb-side newspaper recyc!ing program removes on the average 35 tonnes of newspaper from loca! residents. This. amount of newspaper if diverted into the domestic refuse stream, would cost the City approximately an additional $900.00 in disposa! fees alone. The Committee therefore recommends that S.H.A.R.E. Society's request for $500.00 to purchase one half of the needed blue recycling bags be approved.
