Alaskans seek support for road By JEFF NAGEL MAYOR JACK Talstra says Terrace won't make any snap decision on whe- ther to back an Alaskan plan to build a road con- necting the panhandle to Hwy 37. Mayors and officials re- presenting the southeast Alaskan towns of Ketchi- kan, Wrangell and Peters- burg visited Terrace May 21 ina bid to drum up sup- port for the road. “It’s something I think we have to look at with caution, critically, to see where it might go,” Talstra : said after hosting the Alas- kan mayors al city hall. The proposal involves driving a road from the ex- - isting Eskay Creek mine _ west along the Iskut River, up the Craig River and then down to tidewater in Alaska on the Bradfield Canal. A short ferry from there would take road tra- vellers to Wrangell, Alas- ka and the Alaska state ferry system If there is a concern, Talstra said, it centres on the possibility that a port could be developed at the end of the road in Alaska, taking businesses away from the town of Stewart. Environmental groups have called the road idca a resource grab that would channel timber and ore that now goes to Stewart out through Alaska. “They've indicated to us they have no intention of building a port that could handle raw resources at the Bradfield Canal,” Talstra said. He said the Alaskans say they’re primarily inter- ested in the tourism bene- fits that such a road would produce, “We told them it was worth talking about some more,” Talstra added. “The city would want to know some more informa- tion and see exactly what it is they have in mind and how it would be beneficial ‘to us in the northwest and to them,” The mayor said the possibility of more circle tourism between B.C, and southeast Alaska is attrac- tive. Alaskan officials are also promoting the idea of more ferry links with B.C. City mulls 911 here THE CITY is making an- other move to plug Terrace into its own 911 emer- gency phone system. A committee has been struck to look at different scenarios, the costs and recommend to council how to proceed. ‘City officials here con- lend it’s possible to put to- gether a basic 911 service for the local Terrace area even if a larger system doesn’! go ahead now. Earlier efforts to orga- nize a regional 911 service through the Kitimat-Sti- kine regional district had bogged down over differ- ences between the towns on cost-sharing. Kitimat council had re- fused to be part of the sys- tem unless the dispatch , headquarters was located there, city officials here say, Kitimat also objected on fairness grounds, saying Kitimat industries were going to pay an unfair pro- portion of the costs. “We cannot be held up for ransom by one com- munity,” said Terrace councillor Rich McDaniel. Much of the needed equipment already exists at the Terrace fire hall to provide enhanced 911 ser- vice. That tells dispatchers where ‘a call came from, allowing aid to arrive no matter what happens to the caller or the phone line. Serving on the cammit- tee are fire chief Randy: Smith, Ambulance service unit chief Carl Wassink, RCMP Inspector Marlin Degrand, TENA executive director Brian Baker, and councillors Ron Vanderlee and Marylin Davies, “ - possibly between Ste- wart and either Ketchikan or Wrangell and between Ketchikan and Massett on the Queen Charlotte Is- Jands and more regularly daily service between Prince Rupert and Ketchi- kan. Right now, he noted, tourists who get onthe Alaskan ferry tend to stay on all the way to Haines or Skagway. More road or ferry links wauld make it possible for tourists to get off and spend more time in north- western B.C. Northern caucus MLAs also met Ihe Alaskan dele- gation, said Skeena MLA and northern caucus chair Roger Harris. Harris noted the road raule is te go through an area that has been protec- ted under the Cassiar land- use plan. “They’re aware there are obvious issucs on this side of the border,” Hartis - said, The road up the Iskut valley would be very ex- pensive, including a mile- long tunnel in a_ high mountain pass on the bor- der. But Alaskan officials were hopeful the U.S. fed- efal- government will .ap- prove the money needed to build it. The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 29, 2002 - A?
