A12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 17, 1999 Takeover coming this month Airport numbers steady © DESPITE A troubled tacal economy, the Terrace- Kitimat airport recorded an impressive year, says its manager. Darryl Laurent said 97,100 passengers went through the airport last year, just 112 off the mark from 1997, He attributed the number to an Air Canada seat sale brought about when its pilot strike ended, The sale was then matched by Canadian Airlines International. As well, Laurent said the airport docs well because of the solid Kitimat economy. ‘Although Terrace is secing a fluctuation in the economy, the economy in Kitimat is pretty stable with business and other travel,’’ Laurent added, , The 1998 passenger figure is a good sfatistic from which to view the airport being taken over by a local operating authority, Laurent said. The authority, made up of municipal and ~ business community interests from Terrace and Kitimat, takes over in less than a month and follows a national plan for the federal government to get out of the small air- port business. *‘When you look over the past 10 to 12 years, Trans- port Canada has invested a Jot in this facility. It’s in ‘first class shape,” said Laurent. That includes not only buildings and runways, but an up-lo-date water and sewer system. “The community is the benefactor,’’ Laurent noted. He'll be staying on when the new authority takes over and employment has also been offered to the other four Transport Canada em- ployees at the airport, kk kkk PRINCE RUPERT is the nearest small airport to Ter- face to be mun by a local authority, The authority, a creature of the City of Prince Rupert, took over April 1, 1997, says airport manager Donna Fraser, It’s running pretty close to a budget calling for Tevenutes to meet expenses, she said. But because the airport is in an island and access is by bus and ferry = from downtown, it has greater Logging says same, for now THE RATE of logging al- lowed in Skeena Cellulose’s Tree Farm Licence No, 1 will remain at present levels, says B.C. chief for- ester Larry Pedersen. Pedersen kept the allow- able annual cut for the licence —- which includes much of the Kalum Valley and parts of the Nass — Steady at 720,000 cubic metres. About 14 per cent of the 610,700-hectare licence will be removed and turned over to the Nisga’a if the Nisga’a treaty becomes law, Pedersen didn’t take that into account, but decided he'll re-evaluate the licence’s cutting levels after the treaty is ratified. Also not factored in is the potential of protected arcas being removed from the area under the Kalum Land and Resource Management Planning (LRMP) process. About 16,300 hectares in the upper Kitsumkalum River watershed is proposed asa protected area under the plan, with aboul a third of it being productive forest. “Until the decision has. been finalized by govern- ment, I am unable to specu- late on the outcome of the decision or the possible im- pacts on timber supply,’’ Pedesen said in his decision. He also indicated in- creased yields in intensively managed second-growth stands suggest the medium- to long-term timber supply could increase by as much as 24 per cent. challenges than does the air- port here when it comes to generating additional revenue, Fraser added. “We don't have a lot of lease space being taken up,”’ she said, One change coming is the closure by Air B.C. and Ca- nadian Regional of its check-in facilities downtown.
