The forum _ would be expected to. provide a _ . focus. for a local housing commis- . sion. According to Monteith the housing . shortage anda strong demand for social housing in Ter- race brought about the need for a commission. Monteith stated that. developments such as the Willows always have waiting lists and the Muks-Kum-O! Housing Society had been filling native housing as soon as it was developed. ‘Meanwhile, a public hearing was ‘set for the following week to hear public views on a proposed. apart- ment complex on the east side of Eby, Street, between Davis and ' Walsh Avenues, At issue was property owner Ray Lovstad’s wish to rezone from Two Family Residential (R2) to Multi-Family Dwelling Residential (R3), as well _as fecommendations from the ‘city’s. Planning Department to | Looking back... amend the R3 and Central Com-— mercial (C1) zones to allow the construction of more than one multi-family dwelling per lot. The Pianning Department cited traffic, land use, the Official Community Plan, the availability of R3 land and the shortage of rental units as factors in their decision. Council, however, had received a petition the previous month, signed by 100 residents opposed to the idea. - Seniors Advisory Commission member James MacKay had sent a letter to city council a few weeks earlier expressing concem over open drainage ditches in the city. MacKay said the ditches contrib- uted to a lack of street-side parking and when filled presented a hazard to children. TWO YEARS. AGO THIS WEEK... The board of trustees of Mills Memorial Hospital decided to investigate the acquisition of a $1 million’ dollar piece. of diagnostic equipment, despite. being told by the Ministry of. Health that they . were on their own as far as fund- ing was concerned. Norm Carelius, . ‘the hospital administrator, said the | board decision to investigate buy- ing a CT scanner came as a result of lobbying by medical staff from every hospital in the northwest. According to Carelius, a Ministry _Of Health representative. had said the population. in this region did not justify the purchase of a CT scanner. However, Carelius also said the Dr. R.E.M. Lee Hospital Foundation had expressed willing- ness to raise a portion of the capi- tal cost under the assumption that the ministry would provide the balance. In addition to the initial investment the scanner would be staffed by two trained technicians and would cost $300,000 annually ‘operate. Carelius said doctors and hospital staff were keeping an informal tally of the number of patients who travelled to other areas for the diagnostic service to determine the level of demand ‘for the CT scanner in this area.
