Optimal care for these children requires the combined efforts of the child, the parent and the professionals. Program foundation The B.C. Terrace Review — Wednesday, March 19, 1986 ee oe ee plan “Badger was dependable, reliable, and always ready to lend a helping paw. He was also very old, and he knew almost everything. Badger was so old that he knew he must soon die.”’ ; by Andrea Deakin Terrace Book Reviewer So it happens and Badger’s mourning friends are comforted by the memories of the times Badger has shared with them and the things he has taught them, simple things like a favorite recipe, a paper chain of figures, or learning how to skate. These were Badger’s parting gifts, gifts of affection and thoughtfulness. This is Susan Varley’s first picture. book, one which combines a delicate tender story and delightful illustrations. It won her The Mother Goose Award. (Badger’s Parting Gifts: Susan Varley: Anderson Press/General Publishing: $11.95) Give A Dog A Bone Poor Stray’s search for a bone that will be hers takes her through a series of catastrophes — having bones crushed by a steamroller or swept up by a street cleaner. The adventures of the dusty little dog. weave in and out of the streets of an old town, its medieval building contrasting with the modern — | _ machinery; its streets filled with the bustle of shopp- ing, road construction or a circus parade. Give a Dog a bone (Oxford: $11.95) is one of Brian Wildsmith’s best books, rich in color and variety of scene. The simple story is carried forward by: the ap- pealing little stray dog and his successful use of a half-page inserted between the scenes which can be turned to forward the action. A warm happy ending is arranged when Stray finds the final bone tied to the horse-drawn cart of a newly married young couple. Joan Blos’ first novel, A Gathering of Days, won the Newbery Medal and the American Book Award in 1980. The novel was successful in its understand- ing of the adolescent and in its fine appreciation and recreation of period, the early 1800°s. Her latest novel, Brothers of the Heart, is remarkable for the same strengths and for spare, disciplined prose which yet conveys sensitivity and understanding. “The bards, they say, and the poets love the lame... but they never tell us this: that at the moment of birth the eyes that ought give welcome to a child turn, instead, away.”’ Shem is 14 and crippled. He arrives with his family in a new raw town in Michigan where he finds the rigors of the pioneer’s life doubly difficult, he feels his handicap more acutely, and he is, at best, second best. When an awkward and misunderstood attempt to help his family leads to a quarrel with his father, Shem runs off and finds a job with a trading firm. He is sent off with a group of traders into the Michigan wilderness where, left alone to mind the camp, he meets Mary Goodhie. Mary is an elderly Ottawa Indian who is too frail to travel with her peo- ple, but too strong to die. She becomes Shem’s friend and teacher, recognizing in him abilities and courage. She builds his self-confidence and _ self-esteem, declaring that in his bravery she sees the bravery of YOUR STAY WITH * Satelight TV x Family rates Visiting Prince Rupett...
