FT-B482 er | Nt tag | of our forest economy is re- ported and it is evident the rate of expansion was great- est in our two northem forest districts, Let us first consider the Prov- ince as a whole. British Columbia's timber scale for 1965 was 1,533,- 112,784 cubie feet, an increase of more than 18.5 million cubic feet over the 1964 scale, and nearly a third of a billion cubic feet over the 10-year average. This meant that the total seale for the province rose 1,2 per cent over the 1964 scale — but, turning to the Prince George and Prince Rupert Forest Districts, we find that their combined scale rose 5.3 Ber cent. What is more, their scale was 37 per cent above the 10-year average, while that for the prov- ince as a whole was 25.5 Ber cent above the average. Individually, the Prince George District scale was up 3.9 per cent over 1964, and the Prince Rupert District was up 7.2 per cent. Their combined share of the provincial cut was 25.5 pet cent, of which Prince George District accounted for 13,7 per cent and the Prince Rupert District for 11.8 per cent, In both eases, their share of the tut was greater than in 1964 and also greater than the 10-year aver- age, In specific species cut, the Pr. George District accounted for nearly half the spruce and lodge- pole pine cut throughout the pro- vince, A total of 318.3 million cubic feet of spruce was cut in British Columbia during the year, with 145.7 million cubic feet cut in that Glad Tidings In Annual Forest Re | by The Honorable RAY WILLISTON Minister of Lands, Forests and Water Resources To a northland enthusiast any news of expansion In that area is good news. The Forest Service also contin- ued work in the area to be flooded by the Portage Mountain Dam. In sections of the Parsnip and Finlay drainage where partially submerg- ed trees could impede navigation, the initial selection and layout of some 200 miles of waterway, cover- ing 32,000 acres has been complet: ed, and clearing is in various stages of completion on 5,820 acres, It is an encouraging picture. I think the future looks just as good. Close utilization is coming into being and new pulp mills are scheduled to begin operations, Some concern has been expressed in certain quarters over apparent surpluses of wood, but we should remember we are not building ‘our future in a series of one-year plans, As I have often said before, we do not expect overnight mira. cles.
