a en - Reds pull second in regional | baseball tournament by D. Hamilton * The Terrace Reds broke their losing streak at a very. convenient lime, as they won two games to finish in second ‘place in the Annual Moricetown Tournament over the weekend. cee The Reds, riding a six game slump into the weekend tourney, defeated the Moricetown Cubs and the Smithers Glaciers but lost to the Glaciers in the final game of the modified double knock-out tourney. The Hazelton Braves took third Tn the first game, Saturday morning, lhe Reds and‘Cubs traded runs in each of the first two innings. In the fourth, with the score tied at two, Reds Lance Legoutfe doubled to score two runs which turned out to be the Sports To The Editor: i would like to say a few words about the girls soft ball tournament that was played Saturday and Sun- day. The pee-wee team hosted Houston and Nass teams. The coaches, and umpires did a swell job all through from start to finish, but you ” wouldn't think so from some of the comments yelled down from the benches by the girls’ parents. The em- barrassing part ofit was that it came mostly from the women onlookers, In my opinion (and [’'m . Sure the opinion of many others that heard them) there was more good sportsmanship on the field than there was on the wat- chers stands. Our coaches and umpires give their time without pay or reward to. train the girls in their respected teams, and one thing they try hard to teach them is good sportsmanship on the field. - How must it sound to them when they hear ail the foul insults called down to the umpire, Win or lose the kids enjoy the sport, and most of them are laughing and en- joying themselves,, regar- dless: if fist on lowiteam. a Te kasd coached and umpired, and.helped out the teams. Another nasty (o: more like it-lazy) thing was the way the park and surrounding area was used as a garbage site, There were several garbage cans distributed here and there Glasses, paper, cans ete. were thrown down wherever the person was standing or silting. It was nat all kids either. Cigarette packages, and paper of every 2 give: winners, Jim Kellar was the winning pitcher with Garry McKinaon being tegged with the loss, ‘The ‘Reds then received a bye and took to the fied Sunday morning to’face the Giaciers,, who had defeated the Moricetown Grizzlies, As in the previous game the ‘Reds scored a run in each of the first tow innings, The Glaciers however duplicated that feat and the score remained 2-2 until the top of the fifth, In that inning the Reds Ioaded the bases, and - with two out Jim Kellar hita line drive to right field that was dropped by Smithers’ Jim Watson, and a run was scored. : Following that the Reds centerfielder, Dave Hamilton, tripled into left- center {o score three runs and Terrace was on their Letter to Editc tor description was thrown by a lot of the bystanders, It was really didgusting when you think of how close the gar- bage buckets were, and yet I bet the peoples’ own places are clean because they make sure that their garbage cans are used--so why can’t they set the example away from home. One more complaint before I go. Why can't the toilets at the Agar Park be ‘looked after properly or better yet-new ones put up. Considering the many games and teams that are played there, and the many teams hosted there it is disgusting the way the toilets are left. Most of the parents and kids would not even use the place. It stank to high heaven, and only one was available at ; time, and that was so filth y it is a wonder anybody used it, Surely, Terrace can do better than this or have they. no shame in hosting out- siders te see and use these facilites? Apart from the garbage strewn all over, the filthy toilet, and the bad sport- smanship of some of the bystanders, it was a moat enjoyable weekend, and I thanks ‘to all the ‘cage umpire, girls, and th help who ‘provided the food and drink while the games were in progress. I myself took in two girls for the night, and they were a real pleasure to have, Let’s have a little more - Sportsmanship from the parents, a little more cleanliness from all the ones that used the park (garbage throwers) and maybe next year (if not this year) a toilet that’s fit to use by everyone.
