A Canadian book for children is .

copies a year. The book, the Canadian

Children’s Annual, is'a large and -

colourful collection of stories and
articles written and illustrated by
Canadian authors and artists from
coast to coast. Robert F. Nielsen of
Hamilton, Ontario, is the editor of the
annual, and also president of Potlatch
Publications, its publisher. ‘‘Trad-
itionally a book that ells five
thousand copies is considered g best-
seller in this country,”’ says Nielsen.
“That makes the Canadian Children’s
Annual a best-selling book ten times
aver,””

Nielsen got the idea for the
Canadian Children's Annual while
visiting England. ‘‘Annuals are big
business over there,’’ he ‘claims.
“And [think they are a big reason for
the English being such avid readers.
English children discover from their
annuals that reading can be fun. This
is something I failed to find out
growing up in Canada, 80 | decided to

thousand copies in print! “There are
only two reasons why an unknown

person like myself with a little

publishing house in Hamilton would
order sixty thousand copies of a
book,” says Nielsen, ‘Either because.
he is crazy, or because he intends to
sell every one of them. In my
case, it is probably a little of both.
Besides, I did manage to sell fifty
thousand copies of the lagt one!”

Four editions of the Canadian
Children’s Annual are not the only
publications from Potlatch. Nielsen
started the company with his own
biography of fornier football great
Gamey Henley. Other Potlatch books
include Canada’s Monsters, which
grew out of a manuscript submitied
for the annual, and a pair of highly
successful cartoon books, .

Nielsen believes that the Canadian
Children’s Annual has filled ‘a gap a
mile wide’’ in the Canadian book
market. “There was not a good
general book for children, one that
would appeal to a vast spectrum of
sensibilities and interests, one that
would serve to instruct
delightful fashion and to convince a
kid that reading is great fun! For the
most part the critics have said nice
things about the annuals, but last
