=) Sy The retirement benefit provided by the Unemploy- ment Insurance Act is avail- able to workers 65 years of age and over who have left the labour market. It is designed for one basic purpose — to help bridge the financial gap from the time regular earnings end to the time Canada Pension Plan begins. Recently Royal Assent was given to amendments to the Canada Pension Plan one of which in effect provides for the payment of retirement pen- sions on application to those 65 years of age and older whether or not they have retired from employment. However, a person in receipt of CPP can not be eligible for UIC retirement benefits. RETIREMENT PRIOR TO AGE 65 In some industries, and at certain levels of Government a person may retire with a pension before age 65. In this case, he is NOT ELIGIBLE for the retirement benefit under the Unemployment Insurance - Act. However, if he wishes to continue working, he may be eligible for REGULAR UN- EMPLOYMENT INSURANCE BENEFITS while looking for a new job providing he meets the normal requirements as follows: e HE HAS HAD AN INTER- RUPTION OF EARNINGS © he has 8 weeks or more of insurable employment in the last 52 weeks, or since the start of his last claim, whichever is the more recent © he is willing and able to work, and is actively searching for a job. AGE 65 TO 69 ELIGIBILITY FOR RETIREMENT BENEFIT The Unemployment Insur- ance Commission’s retirement benefit is available to a person aged 65 to 69 inclusive with the following qualifications: e he has an interruption of earnings e@ he has applied and been accepted for payment under either the Canada Pension Plan or the Quebec Pension Plan © heisa ‘major attachment” claimant; that is, he has 20 or more weeks of insurable em- ployment within the last 52 weeks, or since the start of his last claim, whichever is more recent. NOTE: If he returns to work at a later date, having already received the retirement benefit and having withdrawn from the Unemployment Insurance Plan, he should advise his employer that he is receiving Canada or Quebec Pension Plan payments.
