OUNCIL JAN 2 9 7373 TQ: Mayor and Council DATE: January 25, 1973 FROM: Health Committee The Health Comittee met in the Council Chambers of the City Hall on Tuesday, January 23, 1973. The meeting was called to meet with members of the Senior f Citizens Housing Society and Imperial Construction and discuss the progress ™ of the personal care heme being constructed on Tyner Street. The Society members present reviewed, for the benefit of the Committee, all the details leading up fo the construction of the home, how it would operate and in particular how it tied in with the other leveis of accommodation being provided by the Society in the City for example, Hawthorne Manor and Degwood Mauor. The Society have not set an opening date as yet because of the fact that | 4 construction has been delayed by the current elevator employee strike. It is P expected that the building will be in operation in March. Most of Council are familiar with the type of units being offered for rental in tn this complex. ‘The Society feel that they will still be able to offer accommodation in the complex for $10. a day or $360. a month which is the rental suggested to Council when the project was under consideration. The Society informed the Committee that this rental was at le ast $2 to $4 per day below the current market rentals for this type of accommodation and the Society pointed out the many factors that influence the rencal rates. One factor that concerned the Health Committee was the fact that the Society are obliged to accommodate 25% welfare recipients in the complex. At the present time the Government is paying a rate of $196 per nonth or in cases where the person requires a slightly higher level of care they will pay up to $220 per month. The Society must accommodate these people and make up the difference between che welfare rate and the $300 per month rate. As the $306 per month rate is virtually a breakeven rate the Society may find then- fe selves ina position where they must increase the $300 a month rate in order to {finance the subsidy required. Recommendation The Health Committee recommend to Council] that a letter be sent to the Hora --+1e
