City bars big increas LOCAL BARS are seeking dramatic increases in the number cf people they can serve. But city council, which must ap- prove such reqgests, is insisting on a series of improvements to their build- ings first. Increased seating numbers are now possible because of a series of changes in regulations by the Liquor Control and Licensing Branch. The Terrace Inn wants to boost ex- isting seating by 50 per cent in its Dishes on the move A REZONING is in the works at 2709 Kalum St. on the southside for the expected relocation of Skeena Cablevision’s technical operations, The new location is needed because Monarch Cable is buying the cable operation from Telemedia. lounge and nightclub to accommedate 327 people. The Coast Inn of the West also wants a 50 per cent increase, allowing a maximum 505 people in its bars, up from the present 336. And the Back Eddy Pub wants to increase its seating from 65 to 98. In each case city councillors agreed the increased seating won't harm the community, But, on the advice of city planner David Trawin, they are first demand- ing improvements to issues such as parking and building code breaches. Council voted to approve the Back Eddy request — provided the owner make minor adjustments on issucs such as traffic movement around the building, - But both the Terrace Inn and Coast Ina of the West are short of parking and washrooms, Trawin said, and won't get city approval until that changes. “They’re very short of what they’re es to nightclub seating legally required to have now,” he said of the Terrace Inn’s parking lIct. He wants 46 more parking stalls there. ; Trawin noted the Terrace Inn owns an adjacent property and have the abi- lity to add additional parking. The Coast also needs 38 more park- ing spaces, he said. And there’s a serious shortage of washroom capacity there, he said. The four toilets in the women’s washroom are designed to accommo- date 100 women in the bar, which translates into a maximum capacity of 200 for the nightclub. Trawin said that’s well short of the existing licensed capacity of 336, let alone the proposed increase to 505. Council approved a request fram the Bear Country Inn to designate a section of its restaurant as a “food op- tional area” where patrons could order drinks without also ordering food. The designated area would cover 10 per cent of the restaurant’s 131 seats. In addition, moving the satellite dishes to the new location on Kalum St. is expected to reduce the in- terference the dishes pre- sently get from adjacent downtown buildings. Any communications towers to be erected at the new site will be limited to 10 metres in height, coun- cil decided. ' "The rezoning from ser- vice commercial to insti- tutional will require a pub- lic hearing, m Wholesale expansion EXPANSION of the Real Canadian Wholesale Club is underway and employing workers — including Dylan Quinn - with local contractors. The wark is to be completed by May and will add 16,000 square - feet, making the building 45 per cent larger. North Coast trims West Fraser profit WEST FRASER made $131.5 million last - year, down about 10 per cent from its pro- fits in 1999, The company reported fourth quarter profits of $22.4 million, also down from about $39.5 million in the same quarter of 1999, ' One reason for the drop ‘is‘that West Fraser wrote off $19.8 million in machin- ery at its North Coast Timber mill in Prince Rupert at the end of the year. “The auditors say there’s no chance of that mill making a profit in the foresee- able future,” said northwest regional manager Lou Poulin. He said the company is continuing to look for new markets for the custom-cut mill, since its traditional market is essen- tially ‘dead. A federal work-sharing program that’s been avoiding layoffs at the mill runs out May 12. fs Helly Hanson Rainwear Men's “Tempest” Entire Selection PVC Hooded Jackets S-XL Req 59.98 2XL Reg 64.98 | S-XL feg 57.99 2XL Reg 62.98 4.9% $53 $46” $51” Rain Jacket XXS ~ XXXL Reg, 68.98 PYC Pants Stanfield Winter Underwear Entire Selection 20 ” Re Levis Straight Leg Everyday low price Orange fab Jeans $ 4798 | Rubber Boots| Soft Toe, 15” $7 99 Workforce Socks 3/11” Reg. 29.98 Kodiak Short-Sleeve T-Shirts Polar Paw Socks RY 4.98 sonrminanrdl LO Ladies Req 4.69 .3f 1 1* | Mens Stormbuster| Jacket by ‘Pioneer §4g99 Rey, 89.98 A breath of hope for 100 years yeaa” lita | SUNDAY.
