I’s an old cliche that husbands
like to watch sports on.

activities. I don’t agree with this
Cliche, though my husband

does enjoy watching hockey and

it seems that the hockey playoffs
drag on longer every year. On the
contrary, the kids and I go

about our lives as usual, virtually
ignoring the immobile mass

of flesh they call "dad" during
other sports seasons.

This man is an intelligent pers-
on, a person who actually
understands net present value and
capital cost allowance; an
interesting person who has’
travelled through Canada, Europe
and
parts of the United States, Now,
he sits in a stupor, staring
at the television screen, oblivious
to the wild frenzy of
martied life with children carry-
ing on around him. The reason I

transcendental! unification with
the furniture during hockey seas-
on? I play games. with him while
he’s in his "hockey. coma". I
derive great pleasure by simply

- popping my head through the

doorway, to say hello, just to see

. if he’s still in the same physical

dimension.
"Hello," I say.
He looks up. "Hello." He looks

back at the screen.

"Dm leaving you," I say.

"Okay," he says.

"I’ve cleaned out the bank
accounts ‘and sold the house. The
kids and I are booked on the next
flight to Disneyland."

"Okay," he says.

I don’t know why I enjoy this
so much. Maybe it’s an
expression of repressed hostility
towards sports fanatics.

Maybe I have a deeply-rooted
need to verbally protest society’s
expectations of my middle class
role. Maybe it’s just Fun.

Sometimes I play the "crime
and disaster" game, for a
change of pace. Again, I usually
walk quietly into the room,
and say "Hello,"

freezer. Should we have fish for
dinner tomorrow?"

"@*!#! I can’t believe it!" His
attention never left the
screen. Must’ve been a bad call.

Juvenile as I am, this little
game is enough fun for me to
comfortably tolerate his TV.

I can live with this degenerate
behavior for the length of
a standard hockey season. I don’t
really know what the standard
season is, but I know that it’s
now late May and those four
repetitious organ notes are getting ©
on my nerves.

recycling was the main item on
that agenda; too. Terrace council
has already budgeted $10,000 for a
local recycling feasibility study
and are more than prepared to

accept any provincial initiatives or

funding programs.
Mayor J Jack Talstra told members

of the’ Skeena Protection Coalition

in attendance at. Monday night's: -

council meeting that both council
and the province are looking at a
number of possibilities; one of
them a joint recycling venture with
Prince Rupert, Kitimat and Smith-
ers. Among the problems to be
solved first though are the. estab-
lishment of a collection system,
the lack of access to a toxic waste
processing facility. Alderman
Danny Sheridan asked the coalition

recycling issues and news.
