She has noticed that other drugs that she is taking, as well as a vitamin, seem to interfere with the anticoagulation effect. People taking = an- ticoagulants should have their blood checked regularly to ensure. that the dosage remains correct. Some previousiy unex- lained variations are now nown to be due to drug interaction. One drug effect may be enhanced or reduced by the addition of another drug to the patient's total trealment. . As more is learned about the breakdown and disposal of drugs in the body, more theoretical clashes become apparent. Fortunately, most of these are minor and of little consequence, but some are of considerable im- portance. Dactors must be aware of the medications being taken b their patients, and as has been mentioned before .in these articles, it is wise for the patient to carry a list of the drugs he or she is currently using. My questioner suggests that patients should be given @ sheet containing a list of drugs and perhaps foods that are not compatible with any medicine given to her by her doctor. This is basically a good idea, and in fact seme doctors are asking the pharmacist to include the package insert (which contains this in- formation) with the prescription. Because chemical and. generic names are used, this information is of little use to the average patient. The doctor must .be aware of possible interactions and warn the patient, and the proper care of the patient requires that the doctor is aware of all the. drugs the patient is taking. I must take a few lines to thank all of you who have written me. Although I am able to answer only a few in the column in a direct fashion, all are read and many offer useful suggestions for topics for the future. Taken together they dive me a good idea of the type of subject matter you wish me to cover. At a recent Canadian Medical Association con- vention, | was pleased to learn that bath Alberta and Saskatchewan are laun- ching ‘home grown’ medical- columns similar to Info- Health.
