¢ 4 pea TPN ee cet asi ett mn e abe, reat Steere want Mayor and Council June 7th, 1973 Alderman Ranger Re: LIBRARY The purpose of this report is three fold; co outline proposals that have been submitted to the Library Development Commission by two special committees struck by the Provincial Government; to help Council resolve the question posed by the Fraser Valley Regional Library Board of Management "does Port Coquitiam intend to continue as a member of the F.V.R.L. system?"; to try and equate the level of service expected by citizens with the level of service we can afford. In 1971 two reports on libraries were submitted to the L.D.C. The first report ‘A Proposal for Province-Wide Organization of Library Services in B.c.! Suggested that the Province be divided into eleven library service areas using the Regional Districts as the basic unit. This would place Port Coquitlam in the proposed G.V.R.D. system. To the best of my knowledge the G.V.R.D. Board of Directors have not taken any steps in this direction. The second report was submitted to the L.D.Cc. by Albert Bowron Informa- tion, Media and Library Planners, Toronto. The blueprine for the creation of a G.V.R,D. federated library system can be found in Part VII of the report. Within the federation Mr. Bowron Suggests one library authority be established to serve School District No. 43 (Coquitlam), and "that a central library building be built in Coquitlam in a busy central location....". Iam lefe with the impression that Mr. Bowron is not very familiar with cur part of the world. Does Port Coquitlan intend to continue as a member of the F.V.R.L. system? I believe the answer ig yes for the following reasons; 1. I believe that the F.V.R.L. Board of Management is aware of the fact that some municipalities want a more sophisticated library service and will take steps to provide it az cost.
