(ountdown | : 7 oH 4 BY SANDY GLENDENNING Games will leave legacy What does it cost to put on an event of the magnitude of the Northern BC Winter Games? Where does the funding come from? How does the community benefit? The budget for the 1997 Games is over $300,000. The provincial government through the Provincial Games Society will contribute $32,000. Another $60,000 comes from the City of Terrace. The Family of Games Corporate Partners, including Canada Safeway, BCTV, Air BC and Coca Cola adds another $20,000, The remaining $188,000 must be raised locally through fund raising events such as the Rick and Paul King Foundation auction and throvgh local business contri- butions, A budget of $300,000 may sound huge but when you consider the thousands of people who will attend the Games, and the volume of supplies and services needed, it is in fact a bare bones budget. There are over 30 events, all needing qualified officials, maay of which are not available here and have to brought in from other parts of the province. There are thousands of items to be purchased including everything from paper clips to sports equipment and don’t forget the ad- ditional cost of paying the GST, A community like Terrace reaps great benefits from hosting the Games. Sports equipment and other items purchased such as wrestling mats and score clocks are left here to be used by local athletes, There are eco- nomic benefits felt throughout the community because of the ihousands of visitors who spend money here. There is a long term benefit from tourism when people return with their families to vacation in the Pacific Northwest because they were impressed by Terrace and our people, Local businesses who are helping make the Games a success include Alcan who has committed to paying for ali the medals to be presented and to Braid Insur- ance and Remax of Terrace who will jointly sponsor the curling events.
